INTRO TO THE NBA CUP BRUSKI 150 UPDATE
Just take me to the ranks!
Hello everyone and welcome to the last third of the season!
I always write a little something for the Bruski 150ย releases and I'm going to keep this intro shorter than the others because I want toย emphasize a fewย key things and have you walk away remembering exactly what they are.
Firstly, have you guys seen the work being done here? It's amazing!
While the NBA and broader sports industries continue to lean into short-sighted decisions and an endless wave of low-value, click-driven content, our crew is focused on something better, producing true value-add work that consistently drives winning at a high level.
And itโs showing up in the results, too. I was honored to receive my fifth FSWA Writer of the Year nomination, Iโm currently leading the historic industry expert league 30-DEEP by a wide margin, and Iโm making a strong push to win the NFC Overall Main.
Our NFL department and Jon Marsales also earned an FSWA nomination, and our MLB department just released their Draft Guide, the Paul Williamson 300 rankings, Anthony Katesโ Dynasty 300 rankings, and a proprietary Draft Tracker designed to have the same kind of impact in Fantasy Baseball that the Bruski 150 has had in Fantasy Basketball.
We have made big investments in tools both on the publicly available side as well as on the membership side. We have made big investments in our app.
And on the Bruski 150 side all I can say is that if you're not crushing Vegas with our daily projections then you are leaving a lot of cash on the table. Nobody beats the methodology there because nobody is knee-deep the way we are over here in this core concept that we all adhere to when playing fantasy sports, at least for the most part:
Winning Matters.
While the barriers to entry in our industry have become absurdly low, to the point where real hard work can feel almost disrespected, the focus has shifted from delivering true value to pumping out low-accountability content built purely for clicks and views, often without any meaningful investment of time, money, or expertise.
But that doesnโt lead to winning.
At best, an algorithm can be gamed for a short time, at least until it changes, and engagement can be manufactured to create the illusion of credibility. Thatโs not industry leadership. Thatโs optics. And it isnโt sustainable.
The analysis and real work we do cuts through all of that like butter and a butter knife. It makes winning easier as the overall level of competition drops and while we never let up.
But that dynamic creates business challenges across the industry, and thatโs exactly where we step in โ built to win on both fronts.
Lastly, it's long past time for everybody from industry participants who do make investments of time and money and consumers who care about products at the real league level, the media level and at the fantasy level to start asking questions about what they want to support.
Do we think that YouTube and Twitter have been beneficial partners for us? Is it wise that we hand over all of our value to these companies for them to pay practically nothing and create a race to the bottom with algorithm stuff that forces people into sub-click bait strategies?
Does everybody want content creators who can be replaced in a second, making no money, just fighting algorithms for exposure to be the main media vehicle powering reach for each of these entities large and small?
It's understandable that kids who have grown up on smart phones, which are flat out ruining their brains, are looking at all of the short-sightedness at each of these levels and checking out with all of the addictive algorithm stuff zapping their attention spans.
It's daunting stuff at several very important levels and as we are navigating all of this over here at SportsEthos, we have one mission โ we are going to race past everybody by actually investing in real value.
And for consumers and industry participants alike, the question remains, where do we place our time and energy?
Dumping our content on Twitter and hoping for Elon to do something good with it is a path to nowhere. Building up YouTube empires only to watch them eventually squeeze content creators is the hot new thing, but it's a path to nowhere.
The NBA is currently looking at tanking and they are feeling the pushback from fans and media about turning over the product to "content creators"ย during All-Star weekend.
Everybody involved knows how cheap and crappy it all feels. This is how things become obsolete.
Perhaps it's time to support value creation overย nonsense.
And in the meantime here's more winning research then you can find anywhere else. Enjoy!

THE BRUSKI 150 PROCESS
Creating the Bruski 150 takes about 400 hours between July (August this year) and October and we accumulate corporate knowledge every single season. I do full-blown evaluations of about 450 players overall with about 225 players that end up in the ranks, which as you might have guessed started off as a 150 player list starting in 2010 I believe. Overall I evaluate every player on a roster. This is how we win.
Then, after about a third of the season I take the wind down we see before the NBA cup in terms of schedule and I cram together a Bruski 150 using every available minute and every piece of intel we have gained. And then we do it again during the All-Star break.
Because of the proprietary processes one gains overย two decades of doing this, no stone is left unturned and it's possible to do a sophisticated re-rank in the small amount of time.
The results in comparison to other fantasy hoops intel your competition is using just isn't a fair fight.
LAST SEASON'S RESULTS
And WIN we did! Even with the competition buying the Bruski 150 and using it against me, I was still able to run wild in public high stakes leagues, with 6-of-6 Main Event squads finishing top-4 in possibly my best season ever, bringing back right around $20,000. I got another FSWA nomination to bring my total to four (including two FSWA Writer of the Year awards), which are largely because of these ranks.
THIS SEASON'S RESULTS
Itโs been a great start, and it honestly feels like weโre not even squaring the ball up yet.
In the top industry league, 30-DEEP, an historic fantasy basketball league featuring the biggest names in the space and widely regarded as one of the most competitive and difficult leagues to win, Iโm off to a league-best record. The roster was built around Anthony Edwards, Immanuel Quickley, Dyson Daniels, Kyshawn George, Reed Sheppard, Neemias Queta, and of course, Collin Gillespie, to name a few.

And then in high stakes I'm very encouraged with potential to win the main overall event which aggregates teams, and then over half my teams are in contention for money finishes despite some truly brutal injury situations.

The best thing about all of these memberships is that if you keep them active you get to keep the price that you're paying as long as they are active. We want our early supporters to enjoy great pricing as we inevitably start charging market rates for these memberships. Some of our earliest customers are getting well over 80% off or whatever the number is and that's the least we can do for your continued support.
Your memberships don't just help to power this current iteration of SportsEthos โ they also represent support for a platform that has paid more to content producers than any other site in the fantasy basketball space. We're tired of watching the slow decline and rot within the online sports space, fantasy or otherwise, and your memberships allow us to keep leading the way with value โ creating the economic circumstances to keep this wonderful game from decaying.
Without further ado the ground rules for this list!
This is a fearless ranking set
Iโm not trying to play it safe. Iโm not trying to stay in the friendly confines of industry consensus. Iโll probably have a high profile miss. But as regular readers know, weโre going to hit far more than we miss. And weโre going to hit real big on a bunch of them. This list will guide how much you should pay, who you should reach for and who you should run the other direction from.
How these ranks work
By ranking a player (for example) No. 33, I am predicting they will finish as the 33rdย ranked player from NOW until the end of the year,ย cumulatively. ย
These ranks are pure, so they work easily for Roto, and for Head-to-Head you need to consider your settings and strategy
Itโs not a head-to-head list or a points league list. Itโs not a list to account for playoff formats. It can still dominate those formats, but you need to consider your league's settings and your own strategy.
- Make adjustments along the way for a player whose categories or schedules impact their value differently than ranks which are measuring cumulative value over the course of an entire season. Heavy turnover guys may lose 2-4 rounds of value. A bad playoff schedule or outlook might make a player many rounds less desirable. Classic punt players may look terrible in these pure ranks. Use your head and you'll be fine!ย
