Anthony Kates
I'm a husband, father and fantasy sports fanatic. I've been playing some fantasy sport or other since the fall of 1996, thanks to one of my childhood best friends, Brent. I enjoy watching all major sports, reading fantasy novels, watching TV shows and movies, playing video games and writing about fantasy baseball. I started at Sports Ethos in 2023, just writing one article a week and cutting my teeth in fantasy sports writing and I am now a co-lead of the Fantasy Baseball department, co-host of the Fantasy MLB Today podcast and the author of two weekly articles, our dynasty baseball rankings and a handful of random articles a year. I support the Houston Astros, Dallas Mavericks, Tennessee Titans and all things Texas Longhorns.
Pickups of the Day for May 20th
Every Monday, fantasy managers are teetering between two emotions: Joy, because they won their prior match-up, and sadness, because they did not. To continue to boost the ego of the winners and massage the ego of the losers, I’ve put together a special edition of my Monday Daily Pickups. It’s the “Oops, All Outfielder Eligible” edition, featuring an aging slugger, a possible 20/20 sophomore Rockie, the Blue Jays new leadoff man and a strong-side platoon, left field bat out of Seattle.

Each Monday I will be dropping my fantasy baseball week in review, where I cover all 30 teams’ weekly fantasy performance and share the stats we need to know.

Last week on risers and fallers we focused exclusively on pitchers, so this week the focus will be on hitters. There are plenty of good, young bats that are seemingly finding another level they didn’t have before or solidifying breakouts that we’ve been waiting for. On the flip side, determining the bats that are falling and struggling was tough, because there were far more than I care to admit. So let’s buckle in and get to it.

I just want to kick this off by stating the obvious: I am not Joe Orrico. So these week in review articles will feel very different, but very much the same. I’m definitely not trying to replace Joe, just fill in the gap that is now here.
Each week, my goal will be to hit all 30 teams and go over fantasy relevant stats, notes, news, etc. to make it easier on you, the reader, to hopefully not miss anything vital. Some teams will get more words, some teams will get less, it all depends on what exactly happened last week.

Another Monday means another matchup, as we delve deeper into our fantasy season. The further we get into the season, the more difficult it will be to find long-term, impact free agents, so let’s see who might be available in your league that can make some major contributions right now.

The first full week of MLB play is behind us, so now the player pool will begin to tighten up a bit. There is still plenty of value to be found even in deeper leagues, but the further we get into the season, the deeper we will have to look.
