• It’s great to have the baseball season underway! Games in early April, however, have a higher chance of being cold and/or wet, and that’s exactly what we’re facing in the week ahead. Volatile early spring weather gives us many games to avoid but I still see some safe havens for your hitters. This is a special week as we have our first games at Coors Field. Just one problem – Denver’s weather is NOT good Friday and Saturday.

The start of a new season is a good time to say that weather plays a big role in hitter performance. Refer to my article to see how to use weather forecasts to boost your fantasy team’s performance. In a nutshell:

    • – avoid hitters in cold weather
    • – target hitters in warmer weather
    • – avoid hitters when they are facing gusty inbound winds
    • – target hitters who face gusty outbound winds

Finally, this weekly column focuses on fringe players. I don’t suggest that a slightly worse hitting environment is enough reason to bench your superstars (rainouts, however, are a different story). Instead, use weather information as one of the pieces to help you decide when you’re weighing start/sit decisions, mainly for your non-superstars.

Let’s see which games will give us the best – and worst – hitting conditions in the week ahead so that you know when to start/sit your fringe players. We will concentrate on this weekend but look ahead to early next week, too. Here are six ‘targets’ along with a whopping nine ‘avoids’ for April 4-10.
