Every week I will do a quick drive thru of the all the games and cover the relevant fantasy points. I will look at things that might be fluky or here to stay and try and point everyone in the right direction for the future. We never want to overreact to a small-sample size, but sometimes getting in too early is still better than missing the boat entirely.
Bengals 33 – Steelers – 31
Aaron Rodgers is holding on with both hands, but vs. CIN, he could let go of the rope a little whatever that means. Rodgers went for four TDs in a short week on the road which means he’s got a little more left or CIN is just that bad on defense. I don’t believe in miracles though and don’t think he will show up next week vs. GB. Jaylen Warren was in his bag in Week 7! He totaled 158 all-purpose yards behind 20 total touches. Warren is the most explosive RB in PIT, but a timeshare is coming although it was great to see Warren get 16 of the 19 RB carries. Pat Freiermuth (5/111/2). exploded in this one for two TDs, but Jonnu Smith also scored which means three TDs to the TE position. That is a fluke. DK Metcalf having a bad game was also fluky as this was a smash spot on paper. As great as PIT was, CIN was even better behind Joe Flacco. Flacco (342/3/0) nearly broke the record by hyper-targeting Ja’Marr Chase (16/161/1). Chase is back as the WR1 and only CeeDee Lamb is going to push him with Puka Nacua banged up. We all know Chase is great, but Tee Higgins (6/96/1) is coming along well with Joe Flacco, too. Higgins has 11 catches on 18 targets in the past two weeks, totaling 158 yards with 1 TD and is about 80% of what he was with Joe Burrow compared to 10% with Jake Browning. Chase Brown finally got going to with (11/108/0). The volume wasn’t great, but the quality was, but Chase still isn’t being used in the passing game like last season. He’s a tough start next week vs. the Jets.
Pickup of the game: None
Rams 35 – Jags – 7
With no Puka Nacua, it would have made sense to bench Matt Stafford, but instead he went for 182 yards and five touchdowns as Davante Adams found the end zone three times on his five grabs. What a weird game as Stafford essentially threw a TD every four completions. The running game wasn’t really dealing as Kyren Williams only had 54 rushing yards, but it was Blake Corum who had an identical carry count with 12. This mostly had to do with the game getting out of hand and the Rams jumping out to a 21-0 halftime lead, but either way Corum is slowly working his way into William’s workload. Neither are great and neither scored, but Williams is still a must-start player each week. With the bye week coming up, hopefully Nacua can return in Week 10, but Adams still has enough juice to provide elite WR numbers. The Jags should have been in a great spot, especially once the game-script got out of hand, but Trevor Lawrence only completed 23 of 48 passes for 296 yards and a touchdown, adding 18 rushing yards. The lack of garbage time TDs is surprising and it might have to do with Brian Thomas Jr. getting banged up. He only caught three of seven targets for 31 yards, continuing an inconsistent stretch in Jacksonville’s offense. It looked like he was breaking back out, but we are back to square one. At least Travis Hunter scored his first TD of his career and this offense has too much talent to only put up seven points. Hunter had his best game by far with 101 yards on eight grabs. Speaking of regression, Travis Etienne can’t get going despite averaging 5.5 YPC on eight carries.
Pickup of the game – none
Chiefs 31 – Raiders 0
This is going to be one-sided as the Raiders are spiraling while the Chiefs are peaking. Rashee Rice didn’t disappoint in his first game in over a year with Pat Mahomes connecting with him seven times for two scores and who knows how many more it would have been if KC didn’t lead 21-0 at half. The Chiefs are back to maybe the best team in the league and are still getting better. Mahomes was flawless with three TDs and 286 yards while still scrambling for 28 in an easy win. Hollywood Brown disappeared but still scored and Travis Kelce actually led the team in receiving yards. The Raiders are a pass-funnel defense, but the score meant that KC was killing close the entire second half. Isiah Pacheco carried 15 times for 57 yards while rookie Brashard Smith had 14 carries for 39 yards. This is still a pass-first team and with Rice back, expect Mahomes to be airing it out in any game where KC doesn’t jump ahead double digits. The Raiders get a bye week and are in desperate need of it to get Brock Bowers and Jakobi Meyers healthy. Geno Smith was a nightmare and eventually ceded snaps to Kenny Pickett and Ashton Jeanty only saw six carries. The Raiders are a stayaway until they get healthy or prove they can at least move the ball downfield. This might have been the worst offensive performance of the season next to ATL being shut out by CAR.
Pickup of the game – RB – Brashard Smith – Priority Low
Browns 31 – Dolphins 6
Quinshon Judkins has officially arrived and he loaded up on MIA for three TDs. While his 3.4 yards per carry was ordinary, his red-zone efficiency more than made up for it as he consistently finished drives. MIA kept turning the ball over and Judkins took advantage. He’s the only reliable part of this offense and everyone else can be benched. Harold Fannin Jr. is making progress and it usually worth a start as long as David Njoku is still out. The problem is Dillon Gabriel isn’t the answer, but the weather was the dominant story here. As bad as the CLE passing attack was, the MIA one was even worse. Tua Tagovailoa endured his worst outing of the year, completing just 12 of 23 passes for 130 yards and three interceptions before being benched in the fourth quarter. Jaylen Waddle had a forgettable afternoon, catching just one of four targets for 15 yards. De’Von Achane was the lone bright spot in Miami’s blowout loss, rushing 13 times for 82 yards and catching three of five targets for 16 more. There’s a good chance Tua isn’t the starting QB next game, but Quinn Ewers isn’t a much better option.
Pickup of the game – QB – Quinn Ewers – Priority Low even in Super Flex leagues
Patriots 31 – Titans 13
The Pats have gone from inept to explosive and it’s mostly thanks to Drake Maye. Maye completed 21 of 23 passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns while adding 62 yards on the ground. Maye is not only must-start, but in the MVP conversation as the Pats are a playoff team, but next week expect muted stats vs. the elite defensive Browns. Rhamondre Stevenson powered New England’s offense with 88 rushing yards and a touchdown on 18 carries and he continues to dramatically out-touch TreYevon Henderson. We have to finally wonder if Henderson will crack the rotation, but I remain confident in him and pessimistic about Stevenson. Kashon Boutte continued his TD spree, catching both of his targets for 55 yards while Stefon Diggs led the Patriots in receptions, targets, and yards and is the WR1 while Boutte is the most explosive and red zone threat. The Titans fired thier coach, but it didn’t make much of a difference as Cam Ward started hot and did nothing the rest of the game. Ward completed 25 of 34 passes for 255 yards, a touchdown, and an interception in Tennessee’s 31-13 loss to New England. He also lost a fumble that the Patriots’ defense returned for a touchdown. Tony Pollard managed 12 total touches in Tennessee’s loss to New England, rushing six times for 18 yards while catching all six of his targets for 43 yards so that helped his over all line, but Tyjae Spears was more effective in the running game even though he only had five carries compared to Pollard’s six. Chimere Dike caught all four of his targets for 70 yards and a touchdown which was a career-high and he’s not a terrible option if Calvin Ridley continues to miss time. Either way this TEN offense is a stayaway for the time being.
Pickup of the game – WR – Chimere Dike – Priority Low
Panthers 13 – Jets 6
An ugly game between two ugly teams with only one TD. We saw four QBs throw passes which tells you all you need to know. Bryce Young suffered a high-ankle sprain and will miss Week 8 and that means Andy Dalton is the next man up. He might be better for the CAR offense since they have two solid RBs and need the passing game to get unlocked. Rico Dowdle managed 79 yards on 17 carries and added a 17-yard reception in Carolina’s win over New York. He split work evenly with Chuba Hubbard but looked more effective and you have to assume Dowdle is about to take over. With the Bills up next, it could be a big day for the CAR rushing attack as BUF was just destroyed by the Falcons last week. Chuba Hubbard handled 16 touches in his return from injury, rushing 14 times for 31 yards and catching two of three targets for 24 yards and it’s possible he still isn’t 100%. Tetairoa McMillan caught three of five targets for 33 yards, finishing as Carolina’s second-most targeted receiver behind Xavier Legette. Legette was a beast and went for 92 yards on nine grabs with a score and could be making a breakout as many thought it would instead be Jalen Coker who had zero grabs on two targets. The Jets suck and with Garrett Wilson, they had nothing. Justin Fields was benched for Tyrod Taylor and Taylor still threw two INTs. Breece Hall managed 52 total yards on 13 touches in the Jets’ loss to Carolina, but with CIN on deck, it might be the only get-right game the Jets have coming this season. Abandon ship.
Pickup of the game – WR Xavier Legette – Priority Med
