Every week I will do a quick drive thru of the all the games and cover the relevant fantasy points. I will look at things that might be fluky or here to stay and try and point everyone in the right direction for the future. We never want to overreact to a small-sample size, but sometimes getting in too early is still better than missing the boat entirely.
Packers 24 – Commanders – 18
The Packers are making a statement on defense and it’s one we should pay attention to. I will actively avoid playing my guys vs. GB for the immediate future. Jordan Love looks like he’s MVP form, but who is he going to throw to as Jayden Reed broke his collarbone and rookie Matthew Golden isn’t doing anything. Josh Jacobs remains the bell cow and he had 23 carries for 87 yards and a score. That makes 10 straight games with a TD for Jacobs. Romeo Doubs is probably the WR1 for now, but it’s dicey and really it’s Tucker Kraft who is making his name, racking up 124 yards on six grabs and a score. I was wrong about him and he’s must-start until GB gets healthy. Jayden Daniels looked lost and we know now he has a knee sprain which explains a lot. Daniels had 200 yards and two TDs, but it was all in catchup mode and he didn’t run for anything despite having seven attempts. Terry McLaurin isn’t lighting the world on fire and that makes b2b games under 50 yards, but Deebo Samuel is back. He finished with seven grabs for 44 yards and a score and he’s looking like one of the steals of fantasy so far. Yes, he is a sell-high. Austin Ekeler tore his Achilles, so that means rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt is the RB1 now, so his poor game matters less than his promising future.
Pickup of the game: WR Romeo Doubs – Priority High
Rams 33 – Titans 19
I didn’t love the Rams this season, but they are firing right now. Matt Stafford looks great and he had nearly 300 yards with two TDs. I wouldn’t start him for fantasy unless the matchup was ideal and that isn’t anytime soon. Davante Adams refuses to lose a step and I’m still fading him despite the six grabs and 106 yards with a score. Puka Nacua is still a usage monster and he had nine grabs for 91 yards. Adams and Nacua are the best duo in the league right now. I promise it won’t last all season. Kyren Williams somehow didn’t score on the ground while Nacua and Blake Corum did. Corum is a decent stash, but he’s not banging on the door despite five grabs for 44 yards. The Titans are a mess and while Cam Ward got his first TD, he’s not running as much as I thought he would and you simply cannot start him in any fantasy football format. Tony Pollard is doing what we thought he would with 92 yards on the ground, but no receptions or TDs really takes the shine off an otherwise solid game. The talk of summer was Calvin Ridley finally getting a QB, but so far he hasn’t done anything to justify the hype. I hate the Titans so far and will be abandoning ship on them for fantasy. Elic Ayomanor is making a name for himself and is worth a stream if you have an extra spot, but again I have no faith in TEN.
Pickup of the game – WR Elic Ayomanor – Priority Low
Cardinals 20 – Saints 13
This was an ugly game as Kyler Murray was under the weather and had less than 165 passing yards. He did run for 38 and hit Marvin Harrison Jr. for a TD, but AR almost rushed for as many yards as it passed. Murray, James Connor ()39 rush yards) and Trey Benson (69 rush yards) were a three-headed attack that kept NO off-kilter all game. MHJ and Trey McBride combined for 132 receiving yards, which meant no one else had more than 10. It looks like Benson will have a big role in the offense this season and that isn’t great for Connor who has been the bell-cow in ARI. McBride wasn’t able to score, but don’t expect the trend from last season to carry over. Expect a big ARI offensively game next season. Spencer Rattler was solid for NO, but he didn’t find the end zone despite passing for 214 yards and running for another 29. He’s not a terrible QB in Super Flex leagues if you are in a jam and expect NO to be playing from behind all season. Alvin Kamara was solid and scored, but I would look to trade him sooner rather than later. Chris Olave looked great with seven grabs and 54 yards and should be the focal point of this offense as long as he can stay healthy. it was Juwan Johnson who led the team in yards and receptions with eight and 76 and could be making the leap this season.
Pickup of the game – TE Juwan Johnson – Priority Med
Bengals 31 – Jaguars 27
This game was a banger despite Joe Burrow wrecking his toe and now out for months. Jake Browning will step in and we’ve seen him have success due to the weapons, but the entire CIN offense gets a massive, massive downgrade. Ja’Marr Chase did his thing with 14 grabs for 165 yards and while the quality won’t be there with Browning, maybe the quantity will be. Higgins saw eight targets, but only three receptions and he might be the big loser is Browning simply locks onto Chase every play. Chase Brown isn’t taking over like everyone, including me thought. He’s getting the work with 37 carries through two games, but he’s under 3.0 YPC in each. The real test is how much Browning will check down to Brown if Chase isn’t open. The Bengals looked frisky vs. JAC, but most teams will and this team has gone from the most explosive offense in the league to a middling one. Trevor Lawrence also looked great with 271 yards and three TDs, but he also had two INTs. This game was great for fantasy, but don’t count on these teams to be this prolific anytime soon. I like the Jags, but Brian Thomas Jr. is banged up and hasn’t looked effective yet and Travis Hunter is only okay. The Jags were supposed to be a two-tier offense around the young weapons, but it was Parker Washington and Dynami Brown who led the way. They each tied for the lead in receptions and Brown was able to score. I always liked Brown in WAS and think he’s a viable fantasy stash, maybe even flex play if BTJ has to miss a game. Travis Etienne was solid and he’s definitely bouncing back, but it was the rookie Bhaysul Tuten who has the most future promise. Tuten had 42 yards on the ground and another 32 through the air with a score. Pick him up.
Pickup of the game – WR Dynami Brown or RB Bhaysul Tuten – Priority Med
Ravens 41 – Browns 17
This game went as schedules as BAL lost a classic to BUF in Week 1. The part that wasn’t predictable was Derrick Henry rushing 11 times for 23 yards, maybe this is part of the decline people have been speculating about. He’s still Derrick Henry, but he might not be an every week superstar. Regardless, trust him next week and every week after. Lamar Jackson is the best QB in fantasy and it’s not even close. He didn’t rush much either, but he threw for four TDs and 225 which always helps. He is throwing TDs at a higher rate than any QB in recent memory and he’s making WRs pop out of the weeds. Devontez Walker had two TDs one two receptions, but I wouldn’t pick him up. Zay Flowers is making the leap and on this offense, it was only a matter of time. He’s a monster right now with seven grabs for 75 yards and the only caveat was he didn’t score. You can’t start Mark Andrews right now. Wait until he scores and then maybe ride with him, but by then Isaiah Likely might be back. Don’t drop Andrews because he did this last year and then scored 11 TDs. The Browns are going to be okay. They drafted two RBs and they both look like future and possibly present fantasy studs. Quinshon Judkins had 10 carries for 61 yards in a terrible matchup, he might be a must-start right away. Dylan Sampson saw only four carries, but he still had three receptions and a score. Cedric Tillman scored again, but it was a fluke and this game was just weird. Joe Flacco threw the ball 45 times, but you have to assume CLE gives either Dylan Gabriel of Shadeur Sadners a shot. Harold Fannin Jr. stayed effective with five grabs for 48 yards, but David Njoku also had four for 40. Both are going to eat into each other’s workload in the near-future.
Pickup of the game – Either Rookie RB on CLE if available – Priority High
Bills 30 – Jets 10
l should have known better to trust the Jets. They will always disappoint you. This seemed like an ideal matchup for the run-heavy Jets to run wild on BUF after Derrick Henry did the same. Instead the Jets did what they do best. Turtle. Justin Fields got a concussion and might miss a game, which mean Tyrod Taylor time, for better or worse. Fields was awful before he got hurt and that meant Breece Hall did nothing 29 rushing yards and nine receiving. That also means Garrett Wilson wasn’t great, but he at least had four grabs for 50 yards. The Jets might be better with Taylor, but not my much. Either way, it was as bad as you could imagine. The Bills on the other hand didn’t take this game lightly and jumped out to a big lead behind James Cook rushing for 132 yards and two scores. The Bills rushed for 224 yards as Josh Allen added 59 and Ray Davis got nine carries, but only 24 yards. This game was wrapped early so Josh Allen didn’t pad his stats from Week 1 where he had nearly 400 passing yards. This is how the Bills want to play and Allen only had 148 yards which means Khalil Shakir and Keon Coleman didn’t do much, 38 yards combined. You don’t really want to back the receivers against bad teams, but MIA might be so bad on defense, that Allen airs it out accidently.
Pickup of the game – QB Tyrod Taylor – Priority Low unless Super Flex
