Week 2 Injury Roundup
While we had a low quantity of injuries again in Week 2, there were some significant ones. Especially to at the quarterback position. Read below to find out how much time players will miss and how to pivot if you have these players.
Joe Burrow – Bengals – Toe
Burrow suffered a Grade 3 turf toe injury that will require him to have surgery and keep him out at least 3 months. Jake Browning will take over as the Bengals starting quarterback just as he did in 2023 when Burrow was injured. Browning is a viable fantasy quarterback as he will still have the full complement of skill players around him that Burrow did. A tough schedule could create favorable game scripts for him as well. However, it would be best served to look on the waiver wire as some of the most popular quarterbacks still available are Daniel Jones, Aaron Rodgers, and Tua Tagovailoa. None of those three are more than 35% owned on sleeper.
JJ McCarthy – Vikings – Ankle
McCarthy suffered a high ankle sprain in the Vikings’ Week 2 loss to the Falcons and he will miss the next 2-4 weeks. Carson Wentz will now take over the starting quarterback job in McCarthy’s absence. Despite Wentz’ playing time being nothing more than sparingly over the last couple of seasons, if you’re looking to stream a quarterback, this is the week to deploy Wentz as he will take on a Bengals defense still trying to find its way and has been by and large untested so far on the young season.
Jayden Daniels – Commanders – Knee
Daniels seemed fine coming out of Thursday’s Week 2 loss to the Packers until Monday when an MRI revealed that the second year superstar suffered a sprained knee, leaving his status for Week 3 against the Raiders in doubt. If Daniels is unable to go, Marcus Mariota would take over as the starting quarterback and it would be a viable stream against a Raiders defense trying to find its identity under Pete Carroll. If you are looking for other streaming options, players like Tua Tagovailoa, Aaron Rodgers, and Daniel Jones are still available.
Justin Fields – Jets – Concussion
Justin Fields is currently in concussion protocol after suffering the injury in Sunday’s loss to the Bills. His status for Week 3 will not be known for a few days because of the steps to clear concussion protocol. If he is unable to play, Tyrod Taylor would take over the starting quarterback duties for the Jets and just like some of the other quarterbacks on this list…scouring the waiver wire for some leftover starters would be the best move at this point.
Austin Ekeler – Commanders – Achilles
Ekeler suffered a torn achilles late in Thursday night’s loss to the Packers, ending his 2025 season. Ekeler was slated to be the Commanders’ top runner in a crowded backfield this season. Rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt will take over as the number one running back but, as one of the trendiest sleeper picks in fantasy football this season, he is likely unavailable so fantasy managers will likely have to go the handcuff route by taking either Jeremy McNichols or Chris Rodriguez, who figure to get touches as well.
Aaron Jones – Vikings – Hamstring
Jones is currently being evaluated for a hamstring injury and he will likely miss the Vikings’ Week 3 contest against the Bengals. If he is unable to go, Jordan Mason would take over the starter’s role and he was another trendy sleeper pick heading into the season, so he is likely unavailable. While Mason has plenty of experience handling a full starter’s workload from his time with the 49ers last year, Ty Chandler is still a viable waiver wire add at a position still thin on priority adds so far this season.
Jayden Reed – Packers – Collarbone
Reed suffered a broken collarbone early in the Packers’ win over the Commanders on Thursday night. He is expected to undergo surgery on Tuesday and will likely be placed on short term injured reserve. He is targeting a November return so it’s expected he will miss more than the minimum four games. In his absence, expect an increased role for Matthew Golden who’s likely unavailable but Romeo Doubs and Dontayvion Wicks should also see an uptick in opportunities. Doubs is owned in 85 percent of leagues but Wicks is only 58 percent owned.
Brian Thomas Jr. – Jaguars – Wrist
Jaguars head coach Liam Coen said Thomas is dealing with a nagging wrist injury and while it’s nothing major, it is something that may seem to be hampering him as he has not looked like himself in the first couple of weeks of the season. He has been held so far to just five catches for 60 yards through two games including a drop, a short arming of a ball, and struggling to win contested catches so far. It sounds like Thomas should be able to play through the injury but if not, expect an increase in targets for Travis Hunter. Tim Patrick and Diyami Brown could become excellent temporary waiver wire adds.
