Any advice on using the Roto Balance app in draft?
Just used it for my draft the other day, and for many, many mock drafts before that.
I think this should go without saying, but you should definitely get to your draft room early, especially if you don't know which pick you're gonna be. Once you find out what pick you are, then find what picks you have through the whole draft and make note of your pick numbers. (Btw, being on the turn really sucks not only because you probably have to reach, but also because it makes using the app a lot more difficult. You're gonna wanna know if you are actually on the turn, ASAP.)
Knowing your pick as early as possible, will make things much easier as you now can narrow down who you're most likely gonna get in the 1st round. The draft will be a lot tougher though if you're on the end of the round, as you might not know who you're gonna end up with until it's actually your turn. This means that you'll have to be quick on your fingers at typing in names in the app and also figuring out what kind of team build you're going for, all while on the clock.
Best way to do things from my experience is.. Before the draft, preview each 1st round player by typing them in the app. Study the strengths/weaknesses of each player, then make a note of it, as well as players you might not wanna take for whatever reason. This will at least help you get through the 1st round quickly, without having to scramble and type in a player's name on the clock. This will especially help if you're on/near the turn as you'll have more time to think/type for your 2nd round pick.
(Alternatively, if you really want to make life easy with the app, you can pre-plan combinations/pairings for later rounds that you like for each 1st round player. This way, you'll know what you're getting even before you enter the draft, thus preventing you from scrambling during the draft, especially if you're on/near the turn.)
After you make each pick, the time you have between your picks are valuable. Have your queue ready with potential players you're targeting for the next round. I like to have about 5 players queued at all times for each upcoming pick and also preview each of the 5 players to my current build to see which ones I like most. Have some paper ready to make notes of all this during the draft, it helps a lot.
Also, it helps a lot to pre-rank your players. I know Yahoo allows that, so if you're playing there and use the B150 or any other rankings, it's best to set that up.
Oh! One final tip. Turn off auto-rotate on your phone and/or keep it on Portrait mode. For some reason, if your phone happens to rotate to Landscape mode, the app removes all current players listed and you have to re-type all the players back in.
Good luck!
EDIT: One more thing! The turnovers bar in the app does not seem to work properly. No matter what players you get, 95% of the time, you'll end up with a punt level of turnovers. So, you're gonna have to know that 1.6 TOs per game or about 131 turnovers total, is about average.
