The current 1st seed in my league is punting 3 of the 8 categories. He's ignoring FTs, 3s, PTs, dominating in FG, REB, STL, BLK, while being above average in AST.

The build looks unbeatable, all matchups finish as 4-4-0, or 5-3-0 in his favor.

What do you guys think of his system? Genius idea or there's a major flaw to it?

His team:
Collison, Ball, Dunn, Rubio
Brogdon
Simmons, Gay
Davis, Sabonis
Gobert, Adams, Capela

I'm not comfortable punting multiple categories; it leaves you almost no margin for error or bad luck. Punting three in an 8-cat league seems extremely risky to me. You really have to have everything go right for that to work.

I see this somewhat often in 9-cat with an all efficiency punt(load up on counting stats).

This can be effective and I have seen it win, but there are some drawbacks:

1) Like David said, margin for error is very small.

2) The chance for 7-1 and 6-2 wins are lower which makes it harder to really pull ahead of the pack.

To beat such a team, you need to look at your schedule and his, count how many games from each player and make a projection of which of his targeted stats you have a chance at winning (assists or steals for example). Then you target those stats like a madman (often by streaming) and hope you can win in one , plus the cats he's punting.

That build should be called "The Josh Smith" (or nowadays, "The Westbrook").

I tend to punt two cats in a lot of my H2H teams, one of those being TOs because any player with high usage tends to drag that cat down so I don't really pay much attention to it (though I do like to go big man heavy which tends to keep TOs down a bit). Then depending on how guard heavy I am, I'll either punt FG% or FT% but not both.

If I have players like Mitchell, Trae, etc. it's a lot harder to balance high FG% guys to save the cat. I wouldn't say I punt it as much as I ignore it when drafting though.

Conversely, since I like to go big man heavy, grabbing guys like Gobert or Capela tend to drag down FT% but still allow the ability to win the cat every now and then if they have a good free throw shooting week.

So really for me it comes down to ignoring certain cats more so than straight up punting them. I try to aim for winning threes/points/rebounds/assists/steals/blocks with any build, then if I can win the other categories it's a bonus.

I'm murdering everybody with blocks in most of my leagues and it's a huge advantage.

I don't like it. If any of his key guys goes down and he loses his edge in ANY of his one strong cats, his team is boned. It's important to leave yourself the tiniest bit of wiggle room.

I'm not understanding why there such a small margin of error.

He's so far ahead in the categories he's leading in that even an injury to one his key guys won't affect his advantage.

In addition, it's much easier for him to acquire high ranked assets that fits his team.

If you take out TO, FG, 3s, PTs, Simmons, Capela, Gobert, Adams are all currently top 10 players, whereas the rest of the league view them outside top 20.

Small margin because lets say Simmons has only two games one week or gets hurt. None of the other guards are elite at assists.

That's a potential lost cat right there.

What if I happen to have have JJJ, JaVale, Turner and Embiid and I beat him in blocks?

Or I have Kawhi, Butler and Ro-Co and beat him in steals?

The small margin is with only being competitive in a limited number of cats. If only one doesn't go right , that's a loss where as if one is competitive in a few more, losing one cat each week can still allow you to win for the week.
