Hi guys!
I'am not sure if this topic have been brought up in this forum before.
we play a 9 category (fg%,ft%,3s,rebs,assts,stls,blocks,TOs,pts) h2h league. with playoffs after the all star break.
some players tend to punt 4 categories out the 9 to secure a verry strong advantage in the other 5 categories. in this way they can win every match up all the way.
for example some teams try to focus on fts,3s,assists,stls,pts which any nice combination of guards can give you.
what do you think of such a strategy?
It's good for when you're in the playoffs already. It's not very good for trying to make it to the playoffs, as an injury here and there swings a cat the other way.
why would you punt 4 cats out of 9? thats like 1 injury away from a disastrous season.
Agree with Erik and Mike - you need to focus on at least 7 categories so you can guarantee a playoff spot. Then, perhaps once you're all locked up, you can trade away some of those superfluous stats to shore up 5 main categories.
My philosophy is -- Don't punt unless you've been put in a situation where you feel like you should.
While you're drafting, if you notice that you're severely weak in, say BLKs, and you don't see any potential good picks later on, then perhaps you could start your punt strategy then. But I would rarely ever go into a draft thinking "I'm gonna punt BLKs" right from the beginning.
I think the best way to go about it is.. See how your first 3 rounds go. Figure out your stat composition from there, and your potential later round picks, and see if it gels well. If you can't find a good solution to your balance of stats, then by all means, start punting then.
