Thought it would be interesting to discuss our experiences of players that can't be traded for close to their season avg value. Have been trying to move Porter in a league where I don't need 3s and really need boards, and couldn't get various top 40 bigs for him despite him being 21st avg on the season, which prompted the thought. So here are a few to start (all values are 9 cat roto per gm/avg per basketballmonster):
- PG (12th, trade value circa top 25)
- Otto (21st, but his trade value is more like top 40)
- Tyreke (38th, tough to get top 70)
- Tobias Harris (48th, trade value seems more like top 70)
- Nikola Mirotic (55th on the season, trade value circa top 80?)
- Courtney Lee (60th, hard to get another top 80)
- Justin Holiday (68th on the season, almost impossible to trade due to FG% and/or the Return of the Almighty Zach LaVine)
- THJ (72nd, sounds close to a return, almost no trade value)
- Dirk (81st, almost no trade value)
There are also some weird cases where it's almost impossible to trade for a player despite them having struggled or being injured - namely Kawhi and Jokic
Oh and final note... hopefully it's a sign of things to come, but Myles Turner has been this year's Jokic in terms of attracting 'buy low' trade offers. I get offers for him almost every day, just like I did for Jokic last season, and with Jokic his real value was always at least a round or two higher than the offers until very late in the season. Hopefully Turner will start rising up the ranks for the Hoobligans like Nikola did!
P.S. - this is across 10 teams in various leagues, almost all 9 cat. This isn't one roster or specific league experience. Also, I don't ask for / expect to get 'sticker price' for most of these guys, but somewhere roughly in the ballpark seems reasonable. (e.g. Tyreke as a top 60, Holiday as a top 100, PG as a top 20).
Justin Holiday has been that guy for me. Most are afraid of LaVine's return. If he keeps producing, I bet we can move him.
Otto is so very true. No one ever wants to give him the credit he deserves, which is fine because I'm totally cool with drafting him in the 4th round every year and enjoying top-25 production without a second thought.
Justin Holiday, Jeremy Lamb, and Batum are all guys I have been unable to move at a decent price. Back when Cauley-Stein wasn't starting and was at 150 in per game 9 cat value, I couldn't even trade top 75 Justin Holiday for him.
Josh Richardson is a top 15 player over the past month and 75 on the season despite the slow start, and I can't seem to get any offers better than top 100 players. No one respects J-Rich.
Everyone on my squad has next to no trade value.
- Mirotic
- Ingles
- Prince
- Chriss
- Teague
- THJ
- Even Ibaka (though I sent enquiries a couple weeks ago)
It's frustrating because I need to make a 2-1 trade to free a roster spot, but it's also just fine... I'm happy to keep them plugging away and continue to top the league on both averages and actual stats (whilst having ~15 games in hand).
Love the feedback. Good to hear that it's been more or less the same for everyone. I guess that is the downside of some of these 'sleepers' / good-player-no-name-value types, that they have less trade value than they should, since others don't believe they can keep it up.
@Keiran - if it's any consolation those are some good players who could have a great second half in most cases I think. It might be their loss that no-one wants to pay up for them. But yes it's frustrating that they can't swing a 2for1. I would say with Ibaka he has a ton more value now (circa top 55) than a few weeks ago (circa top 100), based on trade offers recently. So you might have more luck now.
THJ will have a ton more value if he puts a good couple of weeks together than he does now, people are very wary (rightly so perhaps) of 'stress' injuries. I think Chriss will also have good value if he keeps it going for another week or two, but I wouldn't be looking to move him. Prince is only going to get better.
