Hi, I'm reading the draft guide and those stuff but it doesn't register to me about values of each player if it is great for his position or not . Take example of KAT

Karl-Anthony Towns MIN C
p/g 3/g r/g a/g s/g b/g fg% fga/g ft% fta/g to/g
25.1 1.2 12.2 2.7 0.7 1.3 .542 18.0 .832 5.2 2.6

How do I dissect like his
Ft's are elite,
blocks is okay
and at which value is acceptable
and which value is okay
and which is a punt?

TIA

This is a hard question and it really boils down to how you value it. You can take the average of the top 25 of each stat and see a rough estimate of what "good" stats are.

I hate to send someone to another website, but Basketball Monster does a great job of illustrating the value of a particular stat on their player ranking page. You can see the impact of a guy with, say, 3.5 assists per game, against the league average.

You know, I had the same question and tweeted it to Dan. He also directed me to BBM haha (jerk! :P). However, if you're not a member of BBM, you can't really get any current analysis. Also, my question was slightly different, although it was to pursue the same answer you're looking for. I wanted to know where I could find league averages for only the top 200-ish fantasy players. I searched around and couldn't find anything that I liked.

So I made my own rankings and compiled projected stats from HB, and some other sites. On spreadsheets, they provide a convenient color coding system that shows you averages of numbers -- kinda like how BBM rankings are like, with green to pink colors.

Anyway, my projected league average are as follows, along with the league's lowest and highest averages:

FG% 45.5 - lowest/37.5 - highest/69.5
FT% 78.5 - lowest/39.0 - highest/90.5
PTS 13.5 - lowest/5.8 - highest/27.2
3PM 1.3 - lowest/0.0 - highest/4.4
REB 4.7 - lowest/1.8 - highest/14.1
AST 2.6 - lowest/0.5 - highest/10.5
STL 1.0 - lowest/0.2 - highest/2.2
BLK 0.5 - lowest/0.0 - highest/2.7
TO 1.6 - lowest/4.6 - highest/0.3

There's definitely a more in-depth look you can do, and this certainly isn't the most reliable way to do things because volume messes up the % averages quite a bit. Also, lowest and highest isn't reliable to look at, since they're both the absolute lowest/highest numbers from the league's worst/best. Then there's also comparisons between positions.. like a point guard that averages 4.5 REBs is actually very good, compared to other point guards.

Anyway, not to get overly complicated, in a simple view, you can take your player's numbers and then compare them to the average numbers to see how well they fare in each category. Also, the purpose of knowing the lowest/highest is to only help you judge value if the players numbers come close to those lowest/highest.

Now, if you're a fantasy maniac, you'll probably know there's only a few players in the top 200 in the league that average over 60% in FG%, just as there's only a few players that average over 8 ASTs, etc. As long as you grasp that general knowledge, then you can probably judge a players stats fairly well.

So for your example, said player has 25.1 PPG, which is ridiculously close to 27.2 PPG (highest in league). On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the best, that's about a 9.5 rating. You also know that generally, most players don't average more than 20 PPG, so that's definitely a solid judgement.

Let's look at your example for 3PM. You listed 1.2 3PM. That's just about average so you can give that a 5 rating.

You do this for the rest of your categories, and you'll get a general assessment on the value of the player's stats. However, I can't stress it enough that it's not the end-all be-all judgement. Like mentioned, many things play a huge role in getting a comprehensive judgement, such as position comparison, volume for efficiency, etc. I use this method as a general look only, which can be at times all you need.

Hope that helps!

@Dan Thanks 😀

@mikeymouse There is. If you're a Hoop Ball draft guide subscriber, on the tab "Draft Guide", you can find a drop-down list, and there's a page for "Projections". I believe Bruski updates it every week or so. If not, you can always use a (less reliable) Yahoo's free projections and many other sites offer free projections. Good luck!
