Been a Hornets die hard for years. 7 years in fantasy football looking to start in a money Fantasy Basketball league this season. Need help basic stuff to more advance strategies
Probably too much to type. What sort of specific parts of fantasy hoops are troubling ya?
And again, thanks for listening to the pod!
Hey Hornets4life!
You came to the right place. It's a big step to get into a money league. Did you play Fantasy hoops casually before this?
Since I'm not sure what level of experience you have, I apologize in advance if stop I drop are too basic.
Here are some very general guidelines at crushing it.
1. Do extensive research before draft day at least a week or two. Not to toot our own horns here, but a draft guide from a trusted source should ideally handle or the info you need and will be looking for.
2. From there, either formulate your own personal rankings or if you are very new you can strictly adhere to a ranking, like the Bruski 150 for example.
3. Have an idea of where you personally differ from the site where you will be playing (Yahoo!, ESPN, CBS, Fantrax, etc). Then adjust your pre-rankings based on your subjective assessment on how well players project to perform.
4. During the draft, as best as you can, draft the Best Player Available (BPA). At least for the first 4-5 rounds. Adjust for positional and/or category needs after that.
5. The draft is half the battle. In order to win, you have to stay abreast of the latest NBA news and their impact on players' outlook. Be active on the wire. Assuming your league has no acquisition limits, you can be aggressive. If it has a cap, then be more judicious with your moves as they will be important come the playoffs.
6. As a "new guy" have the goal of making the playoffs. Keep your eye on that goal. Worry about it WHEN you make it.
7. Interact. Ask experts questions on social media or on forums like these. You'll be surprised how easily you will get smart advice. The key is to know who has good advice and who does not.
That said, if you have more specific questions, feel free to post 'em here in the forums.
Nice! The early 90's Hornets with Johnson/Zo/Mugsy is one of my all time favorite teams. Them, and the Penny/Shaq Magic are what got me hooked on the NBA(I also liked the Baron Davis incarnation, except they robbed my Magic in the playoffs).
My best advice...
Don't draft Dwight Howard!!!
But seriously, if you've never played fantasy hoops before, I'd suggest: 1) keep the buy in small, and 2) maybe try and find a H2h points lg. It's my least favorite type of scoring(I like roto), but I think it's a good transition from fantasy football. If you do get into a points lg, try and load up on high scoring bigs, especially guys with elite rebounding. They generally shoot a better percentage and the rebounds provide consistent points game to game,
A basic team for me would look something like this: PG's I'd be targeting guys like Lowry/Kemba, who are good rebounders, or Dragic, who shoots a good FG% then I'd put a SF/SG at the 2 and G spots, a PF/SF at the 3, then the rest would be PF/C(including the UTIL). All that said, I haven't played a points lg in years, so that may be horrible advice 🙂
Hope that was mildly helpful, the question is kinda vague. Good luck this season, and welcome to the best fantasy sport.

Ya, so I was typing my response while the pros were dropping theirs. Listen to them, they actually get paid to give advice, I'm just visiting 😎
Some what's the difference in Roto, CAT leagues, point total leagues? Sorry to sound so "GREEN" but I want to put the right foot in the door. I have played a free CAT league in espn last year but it was a league that was not very active or for that matter owners didn't even care. Do play tiny small amount of DFS F? Thanks guys!!!!
Lol and No D12 for me only CLT player I want is kllla KEMBA!!!
Roto
Teams compile points throughout the course of the season, based on they compare to the rest of the league.
Example, in a 12 team league my team has the most rebounds recorded, my team gets 12 points in that category. I am second to the last in assists I get 2 points in that category.
At the end of the season, the team with the most points across the 9 categories wins.
Points
Each category is assigned a point value, quite similar to Fantasy Football. Teams go against each other head to head and the team with the most points in the matchup gets the win for the week.
Sample of points scoring:
Points = 1 point
Blocks = 1 point
Steals = 1 point
Assists = 1 point
Rebounds = 1 point
Field goals made = 1 point
Field goals attempted = -1 point
Free throws made = 1 point
Free throws attempted = -1 point
Turnovers = -1 point
H2H Category League
You simply compare how your team's stats vs. your opponents' on a per category basis.
So, in a 9-cat league, depending on how many categories your team wins during the week. You will have end scores like 9-0, 8-1, 7-2, 6-3 and so on. These win-loss tallies add up over the course of the season. Teams with the best records make the playoffs.
Hope this helps
No worries, we were all new once(right Bruski?) 🙂
Basically h2h points lgs play exactly like Fantasy Football, where a specific point value is assigned to each stat, and the object is just to rack up more points than your opponent each week.
In h2h category lgs, there's a determined # of cats(usually 8 or 9) and the object is to win more categories that your opponent each week.
Season long roto is similar to h2h cats in that there is usually 8 or 9 categories, but you get "roto points" based on your position in each category. So in a 10 team LG, you'd get 10 points for being first in blocks, 9 for being second, 8 for being 3rd, etc. And your overall standings are based on the total points you get for your position in ALL the categories. So, for example, in a 10 team, 8 cat lg, if you're first in every cat you'd have 80 points, and be crushing the competition. It plays out for the whole season, as opposed to having a new opponent each week, and the person with the most roto points at the end of the year wins. I prefer it because it minimizes the "luck" factor involved in h2h. A bad week in the playoffs and you're done, but you can recover from a bad week or 3 in roto.
That's an oversimplification of the different formats, but hopefully it was helpful. Gotta go keep a eye on this mock now, so I don't get Auto-picked 😎
Peace
