Hey all!
A week after the keeper deadline, one of the teams in my league would like to drop one of his keepers. Draft is this Sunday and now he's not too keen on blowing an early 2nd round pick on Kemba Walker. The deadline was extended an extra day just so that everyone had a chance to get their guys locked in. Personally, I'm picking right behind this guy and am SO ready to capitalize on his bad judgement.
So, how serious does the fantasy basketball community take these deadlines? What do you guys think? Has anyone else experienced a similar issue before? Should I let him slide?
Happy Hoobin'!

This is a tough one....I personally tend to lean on the "fantasy is supposed to be fun so let it slide" side of things but obviously there could be extenuating circumstances. If this is a long-running league where everyone knows the rules or if you are playing for a significant amount of coin so people should know the rules I may personally come down on the other side of the equation. It is also not like the player didnt know the deadline was approaching and forgot he just changed his mind either due to a) doing some additional research or b) a buddy in the league talking to him about it.
I think the main crux of this question lies in whether the leagues keepers have been made visible yet. If the owners are expected to pick their keepers without the benefit of knowing what other teams are doing I am not sure you should allow this owner to change his after he sees what will be available in the draft. If that does happen, then everyone should get that same opportunity.
It wasn't clear in your question but if you are the commissioner yourself, I would probably defer to the rest of the league. As you are picking directly after him it may appear that your decision to uphold the rules is being done primarily out of self-interest, particularly if youve set a precedent of being flexible (ie extending the deadline) in the past. Unfortunately, commissioners often have to do things that may not be in their own self-interest or may be appear to be in their own self-interest for the good of a league. There is nothing that can ruin a long-running league like commissioner drama.
Yeah you gotta decide if this dude gained a competitive advantage. If the answer to that is yes then I'd consider talking to the league individually so as not to stir the pot and get honest feedback
Thanks for the advice!
I brought it to the league and they voted against it.
I think it was most certainly some buyers remorse and not an innocent mistake. After all the keepers were made visible, I think he realized he could take Kyrie at the spot he's taking Kemba.
I thought I was being kind of a stickler, but no sense in changing the entire league to enhance the draft strategy for 1 guy. Deadlines by definition can’t be ignored after they are passed. Serious leagues need to run properly and that includes sticking to all deadlines.
Do your homework early guys!
