Wanted to pick people's brains about auction drafts. I realize they arent as popular as snake drafts (trying to get a full 12 team mock draft has been very challenging) but I was hoping to get some opinions. H2h, 12 team league:
What do you all think the best strategy is; a stars and scrubs type build where you essentially go after 2 first rounders and maybe 1 second rounder and then fill the rest of your team with late rounders. Or the converse of being patient and getting a more balanced team, ie maybe 7 or 8 mid rounders but no first or second rounders?
Also, to the Hoop-ball staff, any idea when some auction values will be posted? I'm having a hard time translating player ranks into dollar values and wanted to start prepping.

I think it really depends how big the league is, and if it’s Roto. I think with roto leagues you tend to want first rounders bc they don’t hurt you anywhere and afford you more flexibility later rounds. And if you play in a shallow league, late rounders can be quite nice...
If you end up getting a bunch of second and third rounders though, it might be ok. I much prefer getting first rounders though

No way in a 12 team, good league, I'm getting ingles, millsap, Turner, allen for 1 or 2 bucks each. I wish that was the case lol but I know that's not realistic.
This was a yahoo 10 team auction mock draft. If 12 team, yeah, may not be as good but millsap, turner, Ingles are all around 10 bucks per yahoo and you should get them for cheap unless you got very savvy competitive league. And Allen is waaaay below that
I like having balance on my teams and leaning more towards guys with higher ceilings.

I'm an auction guy for most of the last decade now and I take a hybrid approach. I want one blue-chipper and I want that blue-chipper to contribute in most areas. Most any player that would be taken in the first round probably fits the bill. Then, I wait. Inevitably 15-20 more guys disappear as does a lot of money and then the values begin to pop up and I start vacuuming up any deal that I like. It really helps if you know your fellow owners tendencies and you can entice them to spend money early on players you were planning to avoid regardless.
Essentially I build a team from one 1st rounder and then mostly guys from the 4th through 7th rounds, maybe one flier near the end for a buck. It helps protect you against injury risk to one of your two massive stars and yet gives you enough firepower to compete across the board. Even in the years where I've been bitten by the injury bug later in the year to my one star (looking at you AD...) I was able to withstand the blow with shrewd waiver work and the relatively strong contributions from the rest of my roster.
All that said, a friend of mine competes for the title most every year with the Stars and Scrubs approach. I don't have the stomach for such a roster that leaves me so exposed when one of my big guns rolls an ankle.

As you need to fill 2 Centers all the time and lack of quality Centers think I should go hard in auction on Centers?
