I'm curious as to your guys' thoughts on this.
I'm just working through my pre-draft rankings.
My league is 9 cat, but instead of Turnovers, we run Free Throws Made as the 9th cat.
Assuming that Harden/Curry/Lillard make up the first tier, how would you guys rank the 2nd tier? I have Jrue Holiday, Kyrie Irving, Kemba Walker, and Trae Young, with Westbrook comfortably in last place as I'd prefer not to punt unless things go really wrong in my draft!
Am I missing anyone that should/shouldn't be in that 2nd tier?
Thanks in advance!
P.s. enjoying the Fantasy 101 pod idea!
Hey alowry,
I might be in the minority on this one, but I’d have Devin Booker in that 2nd tier. I know he’s more or an SG, but most places allow him to play PG. I’m expecting a big year from him, and with Rubio at the point, we should see an increase in efficiency in both FG% and Turnovers.
Sure, he’s a bit injury prone, but he’s young. Irving is just as injury prone, but much more wear on the tires. Irving should have a big year too, but because no one can beat Father Time, I would be taking Booker over Irving about 9 times out of 10 this year.
Let's start with the top 20 free throws made (per game) last season as a reference point:
1 James Harden Houston Rockets SG 10.74
2 Joel Embiid Philadelphia 76ers PF 9.85
3 Giannis Antetokounmpo SF 9.82
4 Anthony Davis New Orleans Pelicans PF 7.73
5 Kawhi Leonard Toronto Raptors SF 7.64
6 LeBron James Los Angeles Lakers SF 7.60
7 Blake Griffin Detroit Pistons PF 7.23
8 Paul George SF 7.18
9 Devin Booker Phoenix Suns SG 7.09
10 Kevin Durant Golden State Warriors SF 6.88
11 Luka Doncic Dallas Mavericks SF 6.74
12 Julius Randle New Orleans Pelicans C 6.67
13 Damian Lillard Portland Trail Blazers PG 6.53
14 Lou Williams LA Clippers SG 6.49
15 Rudy Gobert Utah Jazz C 6.34
16 Russell Westbrook Oklahoma City Thunder 6.12
17 Zach LaVine Chicago Bulls PG 5.95
18 Danilo Gallinari LA Clippers SF 5.93
19 Karl-Anthony Towns Minnesota Timberwolves 5.84
20 Mike Conley Memphis Grizzlies PG 5.80
Obviously things will change with player movement, however, the numbers don't lie!
I agree, top 3, Harden/Curry/Lillard
Next up on my list: Kemba/Kyrie
Sneaky picks: Luka/Conley/Booker/Murray
Good luck!
Thanks for the reply Cap,
I'm not sure about taking him over Irving, but I agree with you that I'd probably rank him in the bottom of the 2nd tier. The only caveat being that up to this point, ESPN still has him listed as SG only, but I believe you're correct that most places do give him dual-eligibility. I feel like although Booker may maintain his scoring, his assists will take a bit of a hit, assuming he'll be losing a lot of early possession ball-handling responsibilities.
Health is an issue for Kyrie, but I feel like he is a safer target this year, because you can handcuff him with Dinwiddie and likely grab Dinwiddie in the late-middle rounds or early-late rounds.
Good stuff from Cap and Coach!
I'm starting to like Jrue more than Kyrie and Kemba (depending on scheduling for H2H) and agree Conley could be a sneaky good pick.
I'm hating on kyrie more than Boston. Dude always misses games & can't trust him for h2h leagues.
I'd take Kemba all day over kyrie.
I'd have Kemba beal jrue & then trae.
