NFL FantasyPass: Week 4 Sleepers

  • In fantasy football, there are oftentimes players that go overlooked heading into a week of games. Sleepers are left on benches every single week, but sometimes that “big game from out of nowhere” could have been easily predicted and utilized in starting lineups. In this piece, I’ll be tiering and listing some of the sleepers I’ve identified ahead of Week 4 of the 2023 fantasy football season. If they’re on your bench, feel comfortable playing them over a starter with a worse outlook for Week 4. There’s also a chance they could be on the waiver wire, so snatch them up if you’re in need of their services.

I’ll be looking at players rostered in at least 50% of ESPN leagues and tier them in descending order of their percentage started on fantasy teams. In other words: the further down the list, the deeper the sleeper for Week 4’s matchups. Tier One: Started in 20-50% of fantasy leagues

RB Javonte Williams – Denver Broncos (90.1% rostered / 48.6% started)

Javonte Williams has turned in three middling performances to start the 2023 season. He rested most of the second half of last week’s blowout, but still submitted a stat line similar to what he put up the first few weeks of the season. With the Chicago Bears on deck in Week 4 for Williams and the Broncos, they get a matchup with the team allowing the second-most fantasy points to opposing running backs through the first three weeks of the season. This bout with the porous Bears defense, which allowed four touchdowns to Chiefs RBs in Week 3, feels like the best possible breakout game for Williams. It’s now or never, and I’m betting on his talent.

TE Sam LaPorta – Detroit Lions (76.8% rostered / 46.8% started)

While Dalton Kincaid was the most highly-touted rookie tight end going into the 2023 fantasy season, it appears that Lions TE Sam LaPorta is going to be the one to break the mold on rookie tight ends. LaPorta is the TE2 through the first three weeks of the season, after posting a line of eight catches for 84 yards and a touchdown vs. the Seahawks in Week 3. LaPorta looks like the second receiving option of this top-of-the-line fantasy offense. LaPorta only has three NFL games under his belt, and he’s pacing for a historic rookie season. He should be added and started in virtually every league, including this week vs. the Packers on Thursday Night Football.

WR Tutu Atwell  – Los Angeles Rams (65.1% rostered / 28.9% started)

The Rams’ passing offense has been a great surprise to start the season, with young wideouts Puka Nacua and Tutu Atwell off to a blistering start this season. While Nacua has drawn a majority of the spotlight with his historic start to his NFL career, Atwell has been consistently great himself. He’s recorded at least 15 PPR fantasy points in each of his three outings this season. He’s the PPR WR16, and the offense looks to him whenever it needs a spark. The Rams’ passing offense faces the Colts in Week 4, who allow the eighth-most fantasy points to opposing WRs this year. Atwell should be a great start for as long as Cooper Kupp (hamstring) remains sidelined. Even when he returns, Atwell has earned a significant role in this offense and should maintain fantasy relevance.

QB Jordan Love – Green Bay Packers (56.9% rostered / 20.9% started)

Jordan Love has found ways to produce to start the season despite being down two of his best offensive weapons. He’s scored at least 25 fantasy points in each game to start the season, and finds himself sitting as the overall QB5 on the season. He’s had some sloppy throws and bad misses, but the likely addition of offensive stars RB Aaron Jones and WR Christian Watson should both increase his ceiling and raise his floor. Both those players could return as soon as this week vs. the Lions on TNF, and if they do, Love should be primed for another big day. He can be started with confidence for those in need of a good QB play.
