If you have read this column in the past three seasons, you know that we want our fantasy hitters immersed in warm weather because warmer air creates a better hitting environment. Warm humid air is even more favorable for hitters. Meanwhile, cooler air is more dense so batted balls do not fly as far.
In the next seven days, some teams will be basking in temps above 80 degrees with favorable hitting environments but others will face much chiller weather (we’re looking at you, Chicago and Detroit!). Wide-ranging temps give us many series to target or avoid this Memorial Day weekend.
Early next week looks more tranquil with less dramatic temperature swings, so there are fewer series to target/avoid.
Before we look at this week’s target/avoids, let’s check on this weekend’s Yankees-Rockies series at Coors Field. We love it when our hitters get to hit in Mile High City and this weekend is particularly high-profile since the Yankees are in town. There’s just one problem: rain. Friday’s game looks great with temps at least 75 degrees. Sadly, however, it will be cooler and much wetter Saturday and Sunday with quite a few showers and thunderstorms, so both games are at risk of being postponed. Bummer, I know.
TARGETS: This Weekend’s Best Hitting Environments
- Toronto at Tampa Bay (Friday-Sunday; the best overall series with temps near 90 degrees, favorably high humidity and very low rain chances for all three games)
- Philadelphia at the A’s (Friday-Sunday; temps near 80 degrees with no rain)
- San Diego at Atlanta (Friday-Sunday; temps near 80 each game but there is a small chance for thunderstorms on Sunday)
Targets for Early Next Week:
- Minnesota at Tampa Bay (Monday-Wednesday; temps approach 90 each day although there is a 20-30% chance of storms each day, too)
And now the games to avoid this weekend and early next week…
