Had a few drafts this weekend, but this one I'm having the tougher time determining a team identity. H2H, 12 Team, 9 CAT, 6th Pick. I like the picks, but feel like I'm low on big man stats and also 3's and scoring.

Kevin Durant (6)

Dejounte Murray (19)

Jimmy Butler (30)

Chris Paul (43)

John Collins (54)

Jordan Poole (67)

Al Horford (78)

Gary Trent Jr (91)

Tre Jones (102)

Isaiah Hartenstein (115)

Deanthony Melton (126)

Dorian Finney Smith (139)

Tari Eason (150)

@vandrosseyong  That’s what I do! I really like your first three picks.

Strengths: BLK, STL

Weaknesses: Probably none

Mid: AST, FG%, FT%, PTS, REB, 3PT

Players that are good at your strengths: Embiid, Grant, Horton-Tucker, Kessler, McGee, Mobley, Murray x2, Porter and Trent

Players that are bad at your strengths: Barton, Huerter, Kennard

Players that are good at your weaknesses: NA

You’re a jack of all trades but a master of none. Your early picks are going to be enough to pace you in both defensive categories and you gave them some solid help in later rounds. I think you’ll be comfortable in both areas, but your numbers would be about average in a compressed league. It’s not a home run, unless Ivey and Kessler really tip the scales as the only true unpredictables on this list.

The advantage of having no particular specialty is that you can attack your opponent’s weakness(es) every matchup with careful strategy. You’re average-ish everywhere else and I don’t see any unsolvable problems. By average, your FT% isn’t ideal, but when you factor in the volume and accuracy of Embiid, Grant and the Murrays, I think there is enough to compete with. Unfortunately, players that are important to your build (Mobley and Porter) are going to pull in the opposite direction. As will Kessler, who is probably only worth retaining if he is giving you at least 5 RPG and better than 1.0 BPG.

I wasn’t burned by Horton-Tucker in any leagues last year, so I have nothing to hold against him going into this season. People are down on him for a reason, but his per-game averages as a starter over his career are roster-worthy in most leagues. I’m sure I don’t need to remind you that he stands as good or better a chance of starting as the other 14 guys on this uncompetitive Jazz squad. I’d give him a couple weeks to figure it out if he starts slow, given your league depth and no TO penalty.

The Barton-Huerter-Kennard trio is fine in a league of this size. I don’t have any problems with them sharing space on this roster, but I’m not terribly enthusiastic about their season outlooks. For me, Kennard would be the first to go if all your other players work out. Bearing in mind that you have two rookies and THT, it’s possible that you never cross this bridge. The idea of a 2-for-1 trade appeals here, because I think you have a collection of intriguing names among that group of six that you could potentially leverage into a deal for a more impactful player. I think you’re going to have to consider which of these players you can part with almost immediately, since your team is naturally going to want to stream as much as possible to influence categories of your choice. Clearing up a roster space by trade is preferable to a drop if you are able to acquire another top-100 player, but one or the other seems inevitable to me.

Normally, I’d leave a list of players to target on the waiver wire, but the field is wide open for you and I don’t actually know who’s available. I just posted the article “The Week Ahead: Opening Week” and listed all of the ins-and-outs of the schedule with a bunch of players to consider rostering for an extra advantage in Week 1. I suggest you start there and try to jump on the early breakouts this season in case you strike gold. You can always turn over a second roster spot if the first one works better than expected.

@ball_is_wife92 Giddey in the 8th round is a steal! Big addition for this squad.

Strengths: AST (*), FT%, REB

Weaknesses: BLK, TO (*)

Mid: FG%, PTS, STL, 3PT

Players that are good at your strengths: Garland, Giddey, Harden, Love, Middleton and Sabonis

Players that are bad at your strengths: Banchero, Fox, Hyland, Smith, Vassell and Zubac

Players that are good at your weaknesses: Smith, Vassell and Zubac

Disclaimer: Fox and Sabonis are drains on FT%. Take it as a compliment to the rest of your roster that I still called it a strength for your team. While I don’t think Smith will be bad from the charity stripe, I am still fairly confident that he will continue to be as below-average as he has been since being drafted. I expect Smith will get to the line more than the comparatively worse-shooting Giddey and Zubac. They will probably be the worst of an otherwise good group, which should stay afloat thanks to a combination of Banchero, Fox, Garland, Harden and, surprisingly, Love.

You knew what you were doing when you combined Giddey, Harden and Sabonis. This team has to win AST and REB in order to make up for the massive hole in BLK and TO on your squad (not that those three are specifically to blame). I have every reason to believe you will be a terror in AST, but you have a few too many below-average players in REB for me to be as confident there. It’s a strength, regardless.

It’s hard to be critical of Banchero and Vassell, given their upside, but I think that’s the sort of thing I would use to my advantage in a trade right now. Both players have remarkably high ADPs based on their upside at the moment, and while most people expect them to achieve results immediately, you could also seize on the notion that their ADPs might have become too ambitious in the final days of league drafts. Are there players that are better-suited to your build that could be acquired in a trade? Most managers will be willing to talk to you if you come to the table with players of their caliber, so I think you can explore trades for reliable performers in the 40-70 ADP range that might be more likely to boost you in AST, FT%, REB and perhaps another category of your choice. Do not take this as a recommendation to sell at a loss.

Since you’re already throwing BLK and likely TO with this squad, I think you could also consider making sacrifices in FG% in order to make up ground in the other six categories. With Harden on top of this team and two of the rookies expected to have the highest usage rate, you might not be winning that category often anyway. That may open up new value for certain players on your waiver wire. Some of the players that I like in this build are Cole Anthony, Chuma Okeke, Devonte Graham, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Lu Dort, Marcus Morris, Robert Covington and Royce O’Neale.

@dballbball Thanks mate.  Had already flicked Hartenstein for Conley as a bit of a first 20 game bet on his role in the Jazz and a boost to Asst which may need a bit of help.  Appreciate the thoughts.

Roto league, so all stats help... timing is irrelevant.

Thoughts on my team?  12 team/9 cat/H2H

1. (1) Nikola Jokic (DEN - C)

3. (25) Chris Paul (PHX - PG)
4. (48) Kristaps Porzingis (WAS - PF,C)
5. (49) Desmond Bane (MEM - SG,SF)
6. (72) Jabari Smith II (HOU - PF)
7. (73) Ben Simmons (BKN - PG)
8. (96) Buddy Hield (IND - SG,SF)
9. (97) Cameron Johnson (PHX - SF,PF)
10. (120) Onyeka Okongwu (ATL - C)
11. (121) Norman Powell (LAC - SG,SF)

13. (145) Grant Williams (BOS - SF,PF)
14. (168) Grayson Allen (MIL - SG,SF)
15. (169) Caris LeVert (CLE - SG)

Almost went Zion with the 3rd but came to my senses and drafted CP3 to be on the safe side.  Shocked that Bane made it back to me- was pumped about that.  Had to handcuff Kawhi with Powell for his load maintenance days off.  I know Bruski hates Simmons but felt like he was good for the build since I had plenty of 3s.  Cam Johnson at 97 - really hope he breaks out!

Listened to @dbesbris old man pod this morning and I’m going to try to trade for Horford.
