Hey guys,
I'm playing roto for the first time, on ESPN, and I'm having trouble understanding calculating my team's pace. As I understand, ESPN don't offer any pace calculation and I'm not sure when and where should I bench or play certain players.
Also, we have two IL spots and I have JJJ, Myles Turner and RobWill in my team, and I'm not sure if to drop RobWill for someone like Trey Murphy, for example.
Last question I have is about FAAB. In our league there's a budget of 100$ and you can't pick up anyone without putting at least a dollar. Olynyk went for 3$ and I missed him, and I'm not sure if I should save my money or go hard on attractive free agents.
Thank you!
Dan,
I play in a points league that locks players in for the whole week after they play their first game. I’m having some trouble deciding which players to start this week.
Is there a top 100 or 150 weekly ranking you all do to help?
Thank you,
James
@james-kozielski our weekly lineup show mondays at 2pm is the perfect spot for you to ask your questions on those tough choices!
@arbelon I’m gonna get someone on this but I’m at a kids bday party on a Monday afternoon somehow…
@arbelon Hey! So as far as pace goes, assuming your ESPN games cap is set to the default, you should expect to get 82 games out of each roster slot. It might be helpful to set up your own spreadsheet (if ESPN doesn't calculate it for you) and just tick off one game for each roster spot when you have a player in your lineup there. You'll be left with a raw "games left" number for each spot -- you can then turn that into a percentage of games left and compare that to percentage of time left in the regular season to give you a loose estimate.
Philosophically, when you want to bench players is up to you. I'll generally have a collection of players that I'll start no matter what, and then from there it'll be about playing matchups, capitalizing on different circumstances and just chasing different stats -- if I have Joel Embiid and Nikola Vucevic going, I might opt to play someone like Tyus Jones in a UTIL spot over Andre Drummond if I'm in a real battle for assists or steals. As for where you want to place guys into your lineup, again that's up to you, but seeing how many games you have left out of each roster spot will likely be your guiding hand. If you've played someone at PG for four nights in a row, maybe on the fifth day you take your point guard and play him at UTIL just to keep things evened out a bit.
Whether or not you want to drop RobWill depends on how badly you need his eventual blocks. If you're going to need those to make a charge up the standings, you might have to hold on and wait it out. Murphy looks good but he's shooting hot right now and is about to post some inflated numbers with Brandon Ingram out. He should be a late-round option for most of the season; it comes down to whether you think your team will need his production from now through the end of the year vs. Williams potential early-round value over the last couple months.
As for FAAB, I generally prefer to wait it out early in the year and let other teams blow their cash on guys who end up as flashes in the pan. I'll throw more cash out if it's an obvious win situation, like someone filling in for a guy who suffered a season-ending injury, or if it gets later in the year and I need help in specific categories. Generally, having the spending advantage over other teams can pay off a bit more later in the season as injuries pile up and you get all kinds of changes at the trade deadline. By then you'll also have a better sense of exactly what stats you need, too. I might miss out on a huge win, but I'll be able to stack up several smaller ones over the course of the year. Which one benefits you more depends on how your team is built.
Additionally, you can think of that budget as a loose transaction limit. Right now you can stream 100 times through the season ($1) each, but they probably won't be great players. If you spend $5 on a player, that's 5% of your transaction limit. If it helps, you can frame it as "would I sacrifice X number of possible future transactions to add this player now?" (I would've done KO at $3 but most of the early-season names end up being guys you'll overspend on, I've found).
Hope this helps!
Are you sold on Mo Bamba? Thinking of picking him up and dropping Grayson Allen
Precious over Hartenstein?
@steve1der Heavens no. Precious only getting mins because Barnes is out.
Is D. Wright a must grab&hold? If so should I drop Pat Bev or DSJ for him? 12T9catH2h Punt fg%, rebounds and TO build.
14 team 9 cat h2h
Drop Brandon Clarke for Trey Murphy?
Thanks
Long term value - which would you prefer in 12 team 9 cat roto cap if you need rebounds and blocks but only had 1 slot.
N. Richards or O'Neale
