Harden is the safe choice. He has been the better option so far. It's possible that this is the year that Ball overtakes him, but I'd rather see it happen first. You may have a greater appetite for risk than I do.

Harden will be playing with the more competitive team, so I'm inclined to believe he will get easier shots and have more opportunities for assists. Ball is 100% capable of surpassing him and I believe he will, at least, become the better option for PTS as the primary option for the Hornets. They are very close to each other in the other categories, with slight advantages for Ball in FG%, 3PT and STL versus an edge in REB for Harden. The Beard has a major advantage in FT%, despite their comparable averages, thanks to having double the shot volume of Ball. I assume that Harden will sustain his considerable advantage in assists based on last year's averages and the competitiveness of the two teams, although Ball is certainly capable of double-digit assists. 

Based on last season's results, Harden wins a 5-4 decision with PTS, REB, AST, BLK, FT% over Ball with 3PT, STL, FG%, TO. Removing FG% and TO from the equation could make sense with both players being among the biggest negatives in the league for those categories, while counting BLK for guards is also questionable. Regardless, I see this as a win for Harden. 

There's no shame in picking Ball, but proven value is more important to me than assumed value when making the most important pick(s) of my draft.
