Anthony Kates

I'm a husband, father and fantasy sports fanatic. I've been playing some fantasy sport or other since the fall of 1996, thanks to one of my childhood best friends, Brent. I enjoy watching all major sports, reading fantasy novels, watching TV shows and movies, playing video games and writing about fantasy baseball. I started at Sports Ethos in 2023, just writing one article a week and cutting my teeth in fantasy sports writing and I am now a co-lead of the Fantasy Baseball department, co-host of the Fantasy MLB Today podcast and the author of two weekly articles, our dynasty baseball rankings and a handful of random articles a year. I support the Houston Astros, Dallas Mavericks, Tennessee Titans and all things Texas Longhorns.

Pickups of the Day for June 29th

By Anthony Kates / June 28, 2024

Here we are, nearing the end of June, with temperature rising into the high 90’s and low 100’s, deliriously searching the waiver wire for the next gem that is going to help our fantasy teams continue on their winning ways. The top prospect call ups have all but dried up, pitching injury after pitching injury has shoved not-so-great arms into rotations and we’re all fighting to find solid offensive production from every position.

Risers & Fallers: Lane Thomas rebounds, Hunter Brown’s new pitch, Gleyber Torres gets benched and more...

By Anthony Kates / June 28, 2024

This week’s risers and fallers is again a six pack of topics to talk about. Lane Thomas has rebounded from a poor start to the season and a Grade 2 MCL sprain, Jackson Merrill has been the best “Rookie Jackson” in the league and Hunter Brown added a new pitch and completely turned his season around, for the risers. As for the fallers, Gleyber Torres’ poor production has resulted in spending some time on the bench, Carlos Rodon has a complete meltdown and the fall of the Texas Rangers offense.

Pickups of the Day for June 17th

By Anthony Kates / June 17, 2024

The dog days of summer are here, so working the waiver wire or free agent list can feel like a real slog. It’s week twelve of a twenty-plus week season and you’re probably feeling a little wore out, a little tired, of searching the list high and low, hoping to find a modicum of value that can improve your team. I may only have three suggestions for you today, but they can have a big impact on your team the rest of the season, especially if you are craving some saves.

Anthony’s Fantasy Baseball Week in Review – June 17th

By Anthony Kates / June 17, 2024

The week in review covers all the starts by the starting pitchers, what the bullpens did (saves, holds-wise), how did the offense perform (runs scored, walks, strikeouts) and who stood out with the bat, if anyone did. It’s pretty much guaranteed to be 4000 or more words and will cover pretty much every main fantasy statistic and impact players. And it comes at you every Monday morning.

By Anthony Kates / June 14, 2024

For this week’s edition of risers and fallers, we’ve got a six pack of players – three rising, three falling. We have the Jack Flaherty renaissance, Royce Lewis’ return to good health and the Jurickson Profar breakout in San Diego on the risers side of things. For the fallers, we have is-this-it with I-turn-35-in-September, Mr. George Springer, “Not So Mach Man” Randy Arozarena and the infield duo if Mookie Betts and Marcus Semien.

Pickups of the Day for June 10th

By Anthony Kates / June 10, 2024

Finding a productive replacement for an injured player can be imposing, but that’s why you’re reading this. I’ve done the work and found four suitable injury replacements (three bats, one arm) that will be both productive now and in the future.

Risers & Fallers: Yankees Pitching Up, Braves Offense Down

By Anthony Kates / June 7, 2024

In this week’s edition of risers and fallers, we have returned to the standard format, with both risers AND fallers. On the risers side of things, we have the knuckleballing Matt Waldron figuring it out more often than not (he’s having the best knuckle season since RA Dickey was around), every starting pitcher in the Yankees rotation has been phenomenal since the calendar turned to May, and the Guardians sophomore utility-man breakout hitter, David Fry, who’s been the second best hitter on the team since the start of May. The fallers features a pair of Astros starters on their way to Tommy John Town (Cristian Javier & Jose Urquidy), the struggling-so-bad-he-was-demoted-after-a-31-home-run-season Spencer Torkelson and the incredibly underwhelming Braves offensive unit as a whole.

That makes it difficult for us to find some real gems, especially on the hitting side, sitting on the waiver wire. When offense is down league wide, it affects us all, so the only way to truly stand out is either already have those awesome waiver wire pickups or use this article (which we do every single day of the MLB season) to find the hottest, shiniest gems and profit from our savvy pickups.

Top 100 Fantasy Baseball Prospects – June Update

By Anthony Kates / June 1, 2024

This month’s prospect update didn’t see nearly as much turnover and turmoil as last month’s, as we had less players graduate to the majors, so less to replace. There are some new faces in the top 100 (especially on the backend) and a handful of faces that I may be hanging onto for a few […]

05/31/2024 Risers & Fallers: We All Fall Down

By Anthony Kates / May 31, 2024

Last week, risers and fallers was all risers, so it’s only fair this week that we look at only fallers. If all risers was like a celebration, than all fallers will be more akin to a mourning. Be it not living up to their own lofty standards, injury or father time creeping on by them, all of these players have lost something that once made them great.

Pickups of the Day for May 27th

By Anthony Kates / May 27, 2024

We are just about one-third of the way through the fantasy season and dealing with injuries, whether they be to superstars or your 28th round pick, is just one part of the game. Searching the waiver wire, finding a budding fantasy producer or star and being the first one to make a move is also a crucial part of the game. So, because the loss of Acuna is so huge (I mean, he was the first pick in like 99.99999999% of all drafts), I have four outfielders to recommend, in hopes that one of these guys will help dry up our collective tears just a little bit.

Risers & Fallers: All Risers. No, Seriously, All Risers.

By Anthony Kates / May 24, 2024

Look, this week, we’re talking pause-uh-tiv-uh-tee. Positivity. Only the good this week. Next week we can be a little negative, focus on players whose stock has fallen. But this week, I want the sun shinin’, the birds singin’ and the stocks risin’.
