Anthony Kates
I'm a husband, father and fantasy sports fanatic. I've been playing some fantasy sport or other since the fall of 1996, thanks to one of my childhood best friends, Brent. I enjoy watching all major sports, reading fantasy novels, watching TV shows and movies, playing video games and writing about fantasy baseball. I started at Sports Ethos in 2023, just writing one article a week and cutting my teeth in fantasy sports writing and I am now a co-lead of the Fantasy Baseball department, co-host of the Fantasy MLB Today podcast and the author of two weekly articles, our dynasty baseball rankings and a handful of random articles a year. I support the Houston Astros, Dallas Mavericks, Tennessee Titans and all things Texas Longhorns.

It feels like just yesterday we were celebrating the brightest stars in baseball at the MLB All Star Game, but here we are, in the middle of August, with only three weeks left in the fantasy regular season. Time is slowly running out for teams on the verge of the playoffs, while those at the top should stay busy strengthening their rosters. As I was searching through the ranks and looking over the stat lines of some top performers this year, I started to notice a trend of sophomore names popping out near the tops of each position, guys like Brenton Doyle in the outfield, or Zach Neto and Elly De La Cruz at shortstop. Notably, there were some high performing rookies that were missing from the tops of these lists, either due to performance (like James Outman) or due to long injuries (like Triston Casas, Josh Jung and Matt McLain).

With the summer temperature soaring as we enter the first full week of August, the heat is on, as fantasy managers fight to find valuable contributors from the waiver wire. Though at times it may seem like there is no value to be had, if you look wide enough and deep enough, winning pieces can be found. Sticking to the summer heat, I found some valuable players in the Arizona desert and the high humidity of South Beach.
