I'm a husband, father and fantasy sports fanatic. I've been playing some fantasy sport or other since the fall of 1996, thanks to one of my childhood best friends, Brent. I enjoy watching all major sports, reading fantasy novels, watching TV shows and movies, playing video games and writing about fantasy baseball. I started at Sports Ethos in 2023, just writing one article a week and cutting my teeth in fantasy sports writing and I am now a co-lead of the Fantasy Baseball department, co-host of the Fantasy MLB Today podcast and the author of two weekly articles, our dynasty baseball rankings and a handful of random articles a year. I support the Houston Astros, Dallas Mavericks, Tennessee Titans and all things Texas Longhorns.
Pickups of the Day for September 9th
We are nearly to the end of the fantasy (and MLB) season, as we only have three Sundays left until the final day of the regular season. That means all head to head leagues should now be in the throes of the playoffs and roto leagues are down to the top teams battling it out for the top spot. Finding value on the waiver wire is tougher than ever, with teams scouring through the dregs to find the tiniest amount of help.

I am going to use each of those Friday’s and this column to target a different group of risers and fallers, with an eye on their value in dynasty leagues going forward. Today we’ll go over middle infielders, next Friday corner infielders, the Friday after that catchers and outfielders and the final Friday will be pitchers, both starters and closers. We’ll go over the youngsters that have shot up the rankings and the veterans who can and will still impact each of the positions.

With only have five regular season Friday’s left on the calendar, that means we only have six risers and fallers columns left for the 2024 season. With trade deadlines behind us and the playoffs in front of us, we’re going to start to take a more dynasty focused look at players that are performing well or performing poorly. For re-draft leagues, these will still be impactful, just, like, five months from now, instead of five weeks from now (as soon as the MLB regular season is over, for example, in my dynasty league, we can begin to wheel and deal again).

Risers & Fallers: Sophomore Pitchers
A few weeks ago, I found myself scrolling through the position leaders and noticed a lot of sophomore hitters who stood out, so this week I decide to do the same with pitchers. And let me tell you, there are a ton of sophomore pitchers that are standing out, including top-line starters and elite relievers. On the flip side, many promising young arms lost most if not all of their sophomore seasons to injury, while a few others regressed after an impressive rookie year.
