It’s Thursday and we’re here after a thrilling Pacers comeback win at the Garden that should be remembered as the Aaron Nesmith game. But we’re back to the West to cover the Timberwolves @ OKC (-7.5), with a 216.5 points O/U and the newly named Most Valuable Player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. In game one, OKC won the rebounding, turnover and free-throw battle, scoring 21 more points off turnovers than the Wolves and 34 more points in the paint. And the MVP managed to get 55.75 fpts despite only shooting 37% from the field. What will we get today from the OKC superstar, now playing with the MVP title belt? There’s a lot more to get to, so let’s get started!

DFS Pillar Plays
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
Position: PG
Salary: $18,600 / $12,400
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 16 out of his 31 points in the paint, accounting for 30% of OKC’s points in that area. That means around 52% of his points came in the paint, his playoff game high this year. The Wolves allowed around 40 points in the paint per game in the first two rounds and OKC scored 54 on them in game one, and that stat shouldn’t be merited to Shai alone. Rudy Gobert played only 20 minutes, severely hindering the Wolves interior defense, as OKC played Chet Holmgren as the lone big on the floor. If this trend continues, the Wolves interior defense advantage can quickly turn into a negative, and Shai should be able to continue to explore it. Moreover, OKC was able to generate 31 points off turnovers and Shai was only responsible for five of them, despite gathering three steals. Shai has scored 10+ points off turnovers twice on the playoffs, and if Minnesota can’t take care of the ball yet again we could see Shai’s totals rise. And his outside shooting? Zero for four, another area we could see improvements from the MVP, to add to his aforementioned 37% from the field, the 3rd lowest in 12 games played. Oh, and what about his fta? He just posted his playoff-high this season, attempting 14. But he connected on just 79% of them, 12% down from his season average. And, most importantly, he’s averaging 20.2 drives per game in the playoffs, leading the league. And in those drives, he’s averaging 3.7 fta, 4th most in the league. He’s not at the top of the league in a free-throw per drive metric, so, without Rudy Gobert on the floor, Shai is destined to get an insurmountable amount of points in the paint or get to the line at will. Trust the MVP.
