Buy-Low
TE Darren Waller, Raiders
(Week 3: 3-22-0 receiving, five targets, 3.7 fantasy pts in half-PPR)
Things need to change in Vegas, as new Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels can particularly attest to following a lengthy private postgame meeting with owner Mark Davis after remaining winless through three weeks. The Raiders are certainly not lacking in offensive weapons after a blockbuster offseason of moves that included trading for Davante Adams and locking up Darren Waller for three more years. However, for a man they just committed $51 million to as one of the best pass-catching tight ends in football to only get five targets in a must-win game is inexcusable.
Waller has played in 70% of all offensive snaps and has run a route on 78% of Derek Carr’s dropbacks so far, including routes on 89% of dropbacks in that Week 3 loss in Tennessee. So, it’s not like he’s not on the field and eligible for targets. But, an 11% target share in the Titans loss is ugly any way you slice it (by comparison, he had 27% target share in his 2020 breakout year). We know the target tree has more branches on the team than ever before, but they’re also passing a lot more (passing 62% of the time in 2021, up to 70% this year). Buy-low here on the high likelihood that McDaniels hears his owner loud and clear and will make significant changes to offensive play calling to get playmakers like Waller in more positions to help them win games.
