How’d We Get Here?
How much time you got? New York didn’t even get a call back from the top free agents and instead chased the second and third tiers. Julius Randle got a big deal to play a role that leans into his worst tendencies. The Knicks also signed a bunch of power forwards to ensure that Kevin Knox, their lottery pick from a year ago, would get limited run. They collected a bunch of mediocre point guards and flat-out refused to play lineups that had any semblance of floor-spacing. RJ Barrett got to play a lot in lineups that didn’t make sense, and he’ll get to do a lot more of that next year with Tom Thibodeau calling the shots.
Leon Rose took a refreshingly common-sense approach to the offseason, clearing some of the frontcourt logjam and actually pursuing good, low-cost players in free agency rather than spending to spend. The Knicks swung some minor deals to add future picks and look like they’ll give this roster a second to breathe and be reassessed before it’s torn apart. It was a good, if uneventful, first step from the new front office, and we’ll see if that keeps up.
