How’d We Get Here?
The Heat’s vaunted culture is based on hard work, toughness and 100% effort, so they went out and acquired the scrappiest scrapping star that ever scrapped in Jimmy Butler. It led to a reworking of the team’s core, with Josh Richardson sacrificed and Hassan Whiteside mercifully jettisoned out of Bam Adebayo’s way, but it was a perfect fit. Butler embodies Miami’s attitude and lifted a non-playoff team to contender status in a top-heavy Eastern Conference, and a pair of unfortunate injuries were the only things that prevented them from really giving the Lakers a tough battle in the Finals. Their deep run showed a resilient, smart, diligent team that’s easily the hardest-working on this side of the border. Nobody will be sleeping on the Heat anymore.
They tried to keep the band together but lost a couple pieces in free agency, though Miami smartly did everything in their power to keep maximum flexibility on the table for next offseason when a certain someone is set to be a free agent.
