How’d We Get Here?

The Pacers knew that Victor Oladipo wouldn’t be ready to go at the jump, and also that they needed to reinforce the roster to keep things running smoothly and raise their ceiling while they waited for the star to return. Indiana was able to acquire TJ Warren for a song, also snagging Malcolm Brogdon from the cap-strapped Bucks and signing Jeremy Lamb. Domantas Sabonis took a turn towards stardom while Brogdon was thriving as a primary option. Indiana’s depth, including the Holiday brothers, Doug McDermott and TJ McConnell, held up well. The Pacers were looking like a dangerous team in the East’s second tier, with upside if Oladipo ever hit his stride. Unfortunately, Sabonis missed the resumption and Indiana got swept in the first round of the playoffs against a tough Miami team. The team surprisingly fired Nate McMillan, replacing him with Nate Bjorkgren off Nick Nurse’s staff.

The Pacers were involved in plenty of trade rumors but largely stood pat after they were unable to work out a deal for Gordon Hayward. Expect Oladipo’s future to dominate the discussion around the team this season, though the Pacers still look like a competitive team that might be able to surprise some people under new leadership.
