How’d We Get Here?

The Hornets knew they’d be in for a tough season but had some building blocks to work with, tying themselves to a core of Terry Rozier, Miles Bridges and rookie PJ Washington. Beyond that it was up to James Borrego to evaluate who would stick and who would be left behind as the Hornets scrap their way back to competitive hoops. While Charlotte was predictably low in the standings, they were able to take plenty of positives out of the year — perhaps none larger than Devonte’ Graham’s year-long coming-out party. There’s still lots more work to be done but the Hornets have a decent idea about some of their potential long-term contributors.

Of course, the Hornets could also try and cut corners. They downplayed their interest in Russell Westbrook’s bad contract but had no problem cooking up an original of their own, forking over $120 million to Gordon Hayward through his age-35 season. It crowds things a little bit but the Hornets appear willing to take some minutes for their younger guys to accommodate a star-level (or former star-level) player. Time will tell if it pays off in a playoff berth.
