The Pelicans are going to be working out Josh Smith, Chase Budinger and Martell Webster according to Adrian Wojnarowski.
All of this comes in the wake of Solomon Hill’s season-altering hamstring injury and the Pelicans have a major need at small forward. Budinger and Webster can both play there — theoretically since we don’t know what they can even give at this point — but Smith’s time at small forward hasn’t been good for a very long time.
We’d love to know if current Pelicans players such as DeMarcus Cousins or Rajon Rondo have had any input into this development, too, as it would provide further insight into how the franchise is managing its affairs. The addition of Rondo looked like an appeasement for Cousins, as it has been in the past, and Anthony Davis has the Kentucky connection, as well.
Smith and Rondo played in high school together and are reportedly close friends. With the NBA at large trying to pluck the Brow from New Orleans, all of these bad decisions are going to carry significant weight.
