According to Marc Stein of ESPN, Darren Collison will be suspended for the first eight games of the season:

Overall, this is relatively good news for Sacramento. Â It was widely expected that the NBA would suspend Collison, but many of the estimates that had been thrown out to this point were far worse than eight games. Â The suspension will give the Kings an extra roster spot, but as Bobby Marks of The Vertical points out, that will only be provided for the final few games of his suspension:
Players suspended by the NBA must stay on the active list for the first 5 games. Team is granted an extra roster spot starting with Game 6.

For that reason, the roster spot likely won’t provide much help for the team. At this point, expect a battle between Jordan Farmar and Ty Lawson to be decided before the season begins. Â Because the suspension is relatively short, the team likely won’t feel pressure to make a trade either.
Collison will still be able to participate in preseason games, so he will still get some playing time in before he’s eligible to play again against the New Orleans Pelicans on November 8. Â It looks like Ty Lawson and Garrett Temple will take over the point guard position in his absence, assuming that Lawson beats out Farmar during the preseason, and these eight games should give the team a good opportunity to see if he can get back to the player that he was in Denver.
