True stories are always the best stories. Isaiah Thomas was unbelievable and carried the Celtics on his back for a huge performance on the birthday of his late sister. More on that below. MR. RELEVANT DROPS 53 POINTS IN MONSTROUS COMEBACK WIN

Overcoming adversity has been the theme of Isaiah Thomas‘ life. That adversity range true on the court in a big stage in Game 2. Thomas was drafted with the final pick of the 2011 draft, a spot dubbed Mr. Irrelevant by draft nerds across the sports world. Standing at only 5’9″, he has been told that he can’t do a lot of things.

Two weeks ago, Thomas was alerted that his little sister, Chyna, passed away in a car accident. The Celtics quickly found themselves down 0-2 to the Bulls, dropping two games at home. The Celtics regrouped and won four straight, edging the Bulls 4-2 in the series last Friday.

As if things weren’t tough enough, Tuesday would have been Chyna’s 23rd birthday. Thomas was predictably emotional. The Celtics found themselves down 14 in the middle of the third quarter on their homecourt. They quickly cut that lead to five points entering the fourth quarter.

Isaiah Thomas took over. He scored 29 points in the fourth quarter and overtime, ending the game with 53 points and carrying the Celtics to a 2-0 series lead. Thomas finished the game shooting 18-for-33 from the field and 12-for-13 from the line for 53 points with four rebounds, four assists, three steals and five 3-pointers in 45 minutes.

After the game, Thomas spoke about his performance. “Today’s my sister’s birthday,” said Thomas. “She would’ve been 23 today, so the least I can do is go about there and play for her.”

Al Horford was the next highest scorer with 15 points (6-for-9 FGs), 12 boards, three assists, one steal, two blocks and one 3-pointer in 43 minutes. Jae Crowder added 14 points with three steals, one block and two 3-pointers.

Thomas’ big game overshadowed a big night for John Wall, who missed the go-ahead shot from 18 feet out with three seconds remaining. Wall finished with 16-for-32 shooting from the field for 40 points with 13 dimes, three boards, three steals, three blocks and three 3-pointers in 47 minutes.

The Wizards missed a golden opportunity to steal home court advantage in the final second of the game. Bradley Beal grabbed Wall’s miss with seconds left and failed to convert a 15-foot fadeaway at the buzzer.

The Celtics dominated in overtime with a 10-point win.

WARRIORS DOMINATE GAME 1 TO TAKE 1-0 SERIES LEAD

It was quick work for the Warriors on Tuesday as they took a 1-0 series lead at home against the Jazz in a 106-94 win. Stephen Curry led the way with 22 points (7-for-11 FGs, 7-for-7 FTs) with seven boards, five assists, one steal and one 3-pointer in 30 minutes. Most of the Warriors starters sat out the fourth quarter with the game already in hand.

Kevin Durant and Draymond Green finished with 17 each. They truly weren’t needed in the fourth quarter.  When the time comes, they will be ready.

The Jazz inserted Joe Johnson (11 points, five rebounds) into the starting lineup over Boris Diaw but it didn’t help matters offensively.  Iso Joe only plaed 22 minutes in the blowout.

The team as a whole shot just 46.3% in the game. Rudy Gobert was the high scorer for the Jazz, scoring just 13 points (5-for-7 FGs, 3-for-6 FTs) to go with eight boards, three assists, one steal and two blocks in 31 minutes. He can’t do it all.

Gordon Hayward and Rodney Hood each scored 12 points. Hayward had an off night, going 4-for-15 in 35 minutes. He should rebound nicely in his next outing.

Game 2 is Thursday at the Big O.
