The biggest news of the night is that Rudy Gay of the Sacramento Kings suffered a torn Achilles and had to be helped off the court. An injury such as this means that the forward will likely miss the remainder of the 2016-17 season. Expect more usage out of Matt Barnes as well as Anthony Tolliver. Omri Casspi is still out for two weeks, but when he returns and is healthy should also get in the mix playing small forward for the Kings.
Speaking of Achilles heel injuries, two valuable fantasy basketball assets have missed multiple games already (tonight included). They are Avery Bradley of the Boston Celtics and Kristaps Porzingis of the New York Knicks. Since both these guys are already experiencing discomfort in their Achilles tendons/heels, their teams’ medical staff have been playing it safe to avoid aggravating their injuries to the point that something acute might happen, which is obviously understandable. Their fantasy owners will simply have to brave the storm of their absences and wait on their recovery. Both Bradley and KP have surpassed their ADPs this season thanks to some across-the-board improvements in their production.
Toronto Raptors 89, Philadelphia 76ers 94
Jared Sullinger made his season debut for the Raptors and scored eight points in 14 minutes.
DeMarre Carroll hurt his neck and left the game. He played 23 minutes and missed all six shot attempts from the field.
Jonas Valanciunas had a nice outing with a 10-16 double-double, but failed to block a shot.
Bebe Noguiera had a DNP, after suffering from blurred vision from the last game they played.
Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan did their usual schtick, scoring 24 and 25 points, respectively.
Terrence Ross logged 31 minutes, but had a quiet night with eight points and six boards
Joel Embiid reportedly will have his 28-minute restriction for the remainder of the season, which is a bummer, but it didn’t seem to slow him down in this game as “The Process” filled up the stat sheet with 26 points, nine boards and two blocks.
Ersan Ilyasova continued his strong 2016-17 campaign with 18 points (3 triples) and five rebounds.
T.J. McConnell, who had “no timetable” after suffering a wrist injury, started and actually played well with 10 points and eight dimes. He once again outplayed Sergio Rodriguez who had four points and four assists in 19 minutes off the bench.
Nerlens Noel had a quiet night with five points in 21 minutes, but that was still better than the healthy DNP-CD of Jahlil Okafor, for obvious reasons. It looks like Okafor could be the big man who will be on his way out of Philly.
Memphis Grizzlies 101, Washington Wizards 104
Marc Gasol and Mike Conley Jr. did their usual thing and posted solid fantasy performances.
JaMychal Green (15-13, 34 minutes) outperformed Zach Randolph (six points, nine boards).
Chandler Parsons is still “not there” yet, six points in 19 minutes.
John Wall did “John Wall things” with 25-13 double-double
Otto Porter Jr. went berzerk from downtown and hit six treys en route to his 25-point night
Markieff Morris has quietly been more productive recently and he put up a 17-12 dub-dub tonight.
Portland Trail Blazers 85, Charlotte Hornets 107
Kemba Walker and Roy Hibbert (say what?) took care of business in this game. Kemba had 23 points, four treys, five dimes, and three steals. Hibbert was a DFS surprise with a 16-6-2 line in 22 minutes off the bench. No, don’t go rushing out and grabbing him. It was against the Blazers, so he won’t likely repeat this any time soon.
Nicolas Batum had a nice game with 17-7-7 and a three, pretty much what his owners expect out of him.
Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum each shot 7-of-18 from the field and scored 21 and 18 points, respectively.
Maurice Harkless is slowly getting back into form after returning from an injury. He scored nine points in 27 minutes.
Al-Farouq Aminu had a solid, all-around game, with seven points, seven boards, two steals, and two blocks.
Allen Crabbe has faded back ino the shadows with five points in 18 minutes. Time to drop him, for say, Matt Barnes.
New York Knicks 117, Boston Celtics 106
Still no Kristaps Porzingis, who is set to undergo an MRI on his Achilles. Stay tuned for those results. In his absence, Mindaugas Kuzminskas stepped up with 17 points as a starter.
Derrick Rose scored 30 points with a full line to lead the Knicks in this one. He’s healthy and productive. Let’s hope it lasts. On the other hand, Carmelo Anthony had an off night with an underwhelming 13-point performance.
Isaiah Thomas added another monster game to his extensive collection this season, with 35 points (five treys).
Avery Bradley did not play due to a sore Achilles. Marcus Smart started in his place but put up a “meh” performance with four points and five dimes. He did add two steals and two blocks which were nice.
Al Horford struggled, shooting 2-of-14 from the field; but was the lead playmaker for the team with 5 points, seven boards, and 10 dimes.
A recently surging Kelly Olynyk cooled off tonight as he managed four points in 13 minutes off the bench.
Jae Crowder had a nice game with 21 points (two triples), but did not get any steals.
Orlando Magic 98, New Orleans Pelicans 118
The Magic are still a hub of fantasy basketball mediocrity, with Serge Ibaka managing to be the outlying contrarian to the trend. This game was no different. Ibaka was arguably their lone bright spot with 11-7-5.
Anthony Davis returned to action after missing a game (hip), but briefly left this one only to return and finish with a 21-14 double-double. Holding onto him this season remains one of the biggest risk-reward plays any owner can make. He delivers the goods, but he’s getting banged up almost every week. Is it just a matter of time till he misses time or is at least rested? It’s possible. This makes Terrence Jones a solid Ace-up-your-sleeve kind of stash, should “The Brow” miss any significant time.
Tyreke Evans was extremely productive in his 20 minutes on the court with 18 points, four boards, five assists, four treys, and three steals. His stock is trending up and as long as he doesn’t suffer any setbacks, Reke should be a great asset to have down the stretch.
Jrue Holiday had a lovely game as he filled up the stat sheet with some wonderful fantasy goodness. Similar to Evans, he just needs to stay healthy in order to be a solid contributor.
Milwaukee Bucks 92, Houston Rockets 111
Both “fantasy freaks” (and I say that with the utmost admiration), James Harden and Giannis Antetokounmpo duked it out in this game and as expected, both guys were spectaular. Woohoo!
Malcolm Brogdon stays solid with a 7-8-8 line.
Ryan Anderson missed his second straight game with an illness. Operative word there being “illness”, and not being “injury” is a good thing.
Montrezl Harrell played well in a return to the starting lineup with 12-8-4 and five blocks. Clint Capela played 11 minutes and came up with five points and two blocks. Oh no! This could be the beginning of a value tug-of-war between both big men, who provide different things for coach Mike D’Antoni to utilize. This will only serve to hurt both guys moving forward. Both are a hold for now.
Atlanta Hawks 95, Detroit Pistons 118
Paul Millsap filled up the stat sheet as per his usual game, while Dwight Howard was limited to four points and three boards tonight.
Thabo Sefolosha disappeared in 12 minutes of action and Tim Hardaway Jr. scored just 10 points in 19 minutes off the bench.
Andre Drummond played just 23 minutes in this one, but still managed to put up a 13-17-2 double-double performance.
Jon Leuer was not able to give it a go tonight, which allowed Marcus Morris and Tobias Harris to continue thriving in his absence. Both guys will take a hit as Leuer is expected back soon.
Reggie Bullock made a case as a deep-league add with 15 points, six boards, and four dimes in 36 minutes as a starter. His value is short-term, but he could just have earned himself some extra rotation minutes with his strong play.
Oklahoma City Thunder 100, Golden State Warriors 121
Russell Westbrook got a quadruple-double, but not the nice kind with one of the cats being turnovers. Still, who’s going to complain? Really.
Victor Oladipo and Enes Kanter scored 20 and 22 points, respectively; but were the only real support for Westbrook. Against a team like the Warriors, that obviously would not cut it for a win.
Kevin Durant greeted his former buddy with arguably the fantasy line of the night. KD scored 40 points (on efficient shooting from everywhere including the parking lot), grabbed 12 boards, hit five threes, dished out four assists, and blocked three shots.
Stephen Curry continues his upward trend with yet another fantasy gem of a game. 24 points, eight assists, two triples, and three steals should satisfy even the most discerning of fantasy tastes.
Draymond Green did his usual stat-sheet filling thing, but failed to “accidentaly” kick anyone in the nards this time (Thank goodness!).
Indiana Pacers 106, Sacramento Kings 100
I’ve discussed the Rudy Gay thing above, and yes, Matt Barnes is a must-add guy right now.
DeMarcus Cousins had a rare triple-double with 25-12-10 as well as three blocks.
With Ty Lawson missing this game, Darren Collison ended up with a productive outing with 11 points, nine dimes and four steals.
Jeff Teague flirted with a trip-dub and delivered 22 points, seven boards, 11 assists, and two steals.
Al Jefferson came outta nowhere to drop 20 points in 17 minutes. Again, similar to Hibbert, Al-Jeff is not worth adding and this outburst is not something to expect again any time soon.
