We interrupt your regularly scheduled Daily Dish content to bring to you my quick hits on the winners and losers from a fantasy basketball perspective in the wake of all the player movement that took place during the 2018 NBA Trade Deadline.
The commentary is purely for the purposes of assessing and evaluating fantasy value for the rest of the season (ROS).
Willy Hernangomez to CHA
Winners:
Kyle O’Quinn and Luke Kornet – Both of these guys will be splitting the minutes at center moving forward. O’Quinn is worth adding in standard leagues for low-end value, while Kornet’s impressive debut puts him on deep-league radars for now.
Willy Hernangomez (sort of) – Yes, he wins in the sense that he will see more playing time with his new team. He doesn’t win by much because at the end of the day he’s still playing behind paint-hog Dwight Howard. So Willy is freed, but only free to roam within a confined albeit larger space.
Losers:
Cody Zeller – He’s got more competition now. His season was already curtailed by injuries and now by Hernangomez.
Jameer Nelson to DET – Willie Reed to CHI
Yawn! Neither player is really going to make any ripples in the fantasy pond. Nelson might be usable in very deep leagues and only while Reggie Jackson remains out.
Brice Johnson to MEM – James Ennis to DET
Ennis will get some deep-league value as he comes off the Pistons’ bench, but his appeal is limited to 18-team leagues or deeper right now.
Johnson should be left on the wires for now but is worth observing in the event that he gets some time in the rotation. Again, for deep leagues only at best.
Luke Babbitt to MIA – Okaro White to ATL
You can forget about White. Well it’s not as if you were looking at him at all in the first place, right?
Babbitt is a different story. He’s a former Heat player so the history helps. His addition hurts the likes of Wayne Ellington as they serve the same role (spot-up shooter) for the team.
Rashad Vaughn to NO – Dante Cunningham to BKN
Yawn! Let’s move on.
Doug McDermott to DAL – Devin Harris to DEN – Emmanuel Mudiay to NY
Winners:
Mudiay is the big winner in this three-way deal. The Knicks decided to roll the dice and are solving their point guard problems. He’s worth a grab in 14-team leagues or deeper. He still will have his old stat set issues (TO) as baggage so grab accordingly.
Doug McDermott – He will actually be used by the Mavs as an extra three-point shooter to spread the floor. He’s now a streaming option for his threes or an add in 18-team leagues or deeper.
Devin Harris – Good news is that he’s in a less clogged PG situation. The bad news is that he’s still old and injury prone as hell. Small win? Maybe. Add only in very deep leagues.
Losers:
Jarrett Jack and Frank Ntilikina – Mudiay’s addition flushes their fantasy value down the drain. You can drop both players in all but the very deepest of leagues.
Elfrid Payton to PHO
Winners:
This was the shocker of the day. Clearly, Payton is a big winner here. He should fit right in with the Phoenix up-tempo offense and acclimate in no time.
Not be discounted here is D.J. Augustin, who is far and away the most important must-add player in the wake of the deadline hullabaloo. He’s inheriting the Magic starting PG job outright and will get all the minutes he can handle moving forward. Shelvin Mack also pings in deep-league radars as Augustin’s backup.
Losers:
Tyler Ulis was already a loser before this deal. Now, he’s really going to fade into obscurity.
That other guy the Suns just signed to a 10-day deal and won’t likely get a guaranteed contract for the remainder of the season. Poor guy. He played kinda well-ish. Sorta. Who cares now? No one. Sorry.

Because of their frenetic overhaul, the Cavaliers get a section in this post all to themselves (whoever they may be now).
Cavaliers Get:
Jazz Get:
Derrick Rose (will be waived)
Los Angeles Lakers Get:
Miami Heat Get:
Sacramento Kings Get:
Cleveland Cavaliers what have you done?
Winners:
LeBron James – He was starting to suck because he was wallowing in a cesspool of suck. This drastic change in personnel should be a jolt that re-energizes the King to his second-round value levels at least. Well, that’s the hope here.
George Hill – Despite his age and injury risk, Hill is expected to undergo a renaissance because of his new situation. His game is actually quite complementary to LeBron James and his schtick. He will start and bring down the ball and a cup of Gatorade for the King but should be able to record some points, assists, threes and occasional steals.
Jae Crowder – He gets a fresh start in a new team. He can only improve from his awful stint with the Cavs. Whether or not he will be Boston-Crowder-good is another story. Let’s see.
Dwyane Wade – He’s home… where he really belongs.
Rodney Hood is going to be utilized as a younger, fresher J.R. Smith off the bench. He’s going to get some opportunities to shine on a team that wants to highlight the strengths of his game.
Larry Nance Jr. – He’s a temporary winner in the sense that he’s free of that LA logjam but will fade once Kevin Love returns from his injury and will be used more sparingly.
Julius Randle/Kyle Kuzma/Brook Lopez – Nance’s departure simply gives each of these guys more minutes to play around with overall.
Ricky Rubio and Donovan Mitchell – Well, for the simple reason that the Jazz are releasing Rose and he won’t end up being a thorn in their already cluttered yet growing dynamic.
Joe Johnson – He will reportedly be released and might sign with a contender. Houston maybe? It’s speculation at this point.
Losers:
Isaiah Thomas – The move doesn’t do him any favors. He’s now sharing a backcourt with Lakers pet-rookie, Lonzo Ball. Thomas is now also in a team that has connections to the sports personality known as LaVar Ball. Haha! #kiddingnotkidding
Lonzo Ball – Not only has his season been slowed down by his injuries he now has to figure out how to co-exist with IT.
Tristan Thompson – He was a marginal asset in deep leagues prior to this deal. Nance’s presence will definitely take some wind out of his tattered sails moving forward.
Joe Ingles? – Jae Crowder is also a three-and-d guy who can potentially eat into some of Smokin’ Joe’s time. The hit should be minor at most. Royce O’Neale takes a bigger hit actually and it’s a shame because he was doing well in recent games.
Hill, Crowder, Nance, Hood, Thomas are worth owning in standard leagues right now. Whether or not they will be kept by the fantasy teams adding them will be predicated on how well they adjust and perform moving forward.
